Someone link me the cooling threads please?!
my junk is getting hot on easy hills and moderate temps...
Seems like the fan is working but it will turn by hand with a bit of resistance, no junk in the rad, e pump (holley) 9.5* ip timing, clean air, fuel filter, less than 5k elevation..

Saved for later!
Looking for the thread about replacement oil for the fan clutch..
Zf 5
statt is only a few years old but on the list.
Fluids are good, and fresh, coolant +- 5 years old fleetcharge
Turning ac off BARLEY helps
The fan is cycling on off but it's not sheding heat for #$$%-
This is new, I don't use her much but these hills should not be an issue, heading down 101 from willits ca towards the gaybay 60 mph on cruise flat ish ground running 205-220, just see a hill and it climbs UP...
Gunna go out and diagnostic my butt off here in a second.
Filter minder shows normal restrictions on the high side but not bad (cleaning it now).
The overall health of this rig is above average.
Stock tires,4:10, nuthing abnormal.
Be back....

Did you check your coolant level and oil level? You have a stick vs auto so rad cooler does not come into play?

If above is so, sounds like a thermostat not opening all the way. I would try a new thermostat but sure to only do the Motorcraft thermostat.

Also have you tried with the a/c off?

On a really steep hill on a dirt/gravel road in Wyoming, my RV almost overheated (got to 240*F on the gauge after I came to a stop) when I forgot I had the AC on. It got a new Motorcraft fan clutch and thermostat ~5k miles ago in late 2019, and runs cooler than it did before the new parts, so I can say first hand that AC can really drive up the heat. It only took a few minutes to cool down to 220*F at idle with the heat on full blast. So definitely keep AC turned off during steep climbs.

The old fan clutch never fully locked up at full operating temp. You could stop after driving 70mph on the interstate (late spring/early summer in the midwest), shut it off, and the fan could easily be moved by a single finger. The fan did turn, but just not fast enough.

Thanx

Only thing I found was some turbo shaft loosness, not touching but can be moved up\dn in the center housing.
i have noted some 1\2 psi boost loss as of late.
and a reluctance to spool at 2-2500 like it used to.
so a statt, coolant, and then see how it goes.
time for some turbo tech hunting.

I found a new motorcraft fan clutch on eBay and I don't think it's working. I wish parts were reliable anymore.....

I was pushing 230 pulling my 5th wheel the other day, and I'm still NA. It's working better than the old one, but I really don't think it's locking up.

Yeah it's complete BS. Like the stuff from Amazon that ends up being a cheap knockoff rebranded. WTH

So you guy's with new fomoco fan clutches....
How stiff are they as in how hard to rotate when cold?
Mine wants me to get 2 fingers on it to spin it cold.

I could move it with 1 finger when I put it on, but it was tight. Truck was already warm so I don't know if that made a difference. Old one would spin though!

I ran my old truck with no fan at all for two summers, and it cooled pretty well without it. Flat ground without a load, i don’t think you fan should be doing much.

I will bet you a cold beer that your thermostat is the culprit :popcorn

Man
I ordered coolant and a fomoco statt, starting in on draining and flushing.
The rad is fouled, I must have been blind looking thru the pink chitt.
So being in the nanny state whose Motto is "no you can't do that" I am hunting an honest old school rad shop around 94558, as I presume they all went outta the business of boiling and rodding a cherry looking brass unit?! I am also looking at aluminum replacement units.
It seems there is some back and forth on a "good" replacement unit!
so anyone got the winning tow pig radiator fix?
I Wish it was the statt...

After buying a mishimoto, I'll be trying a champion next time. The mishimoto is a decent piece, but I don't think it's worth the premium price I paid.

I've heard back and forth about the champion too, which is why I tried paying the piper.

Can't anyone make decent stuff anymore???
