Glow plug controller HELP

OK. So I got a chance to test power to my glow plugs tonight. No even 1 volt to the glow plugs. I had my wife in the truck and turn it to the on position. Heard the glow plug controller made one click and no power to the glow plugs them self. Would this indicate a bad controller?

Bypass the controller by grounding the little terminal on the relay. If you get voltage then, it's the controller.
But relay itself could be bad. Or even the wires going to it.

So the red wire on the picture is the one I should ground out? Or the white wire?

I had similar issues with my truck when I bought it a few years back. I had a hell of a time getting it started when it was 25 degrees F and running late to work. Replaced controller and that didn't help....good insurance to replace it anyways tho ;Sweet. It ended up being the solenoid on the passenger side fender that was toast. Bought one for $15 and that fixed my problem.

So I ground out the relay and got nothing. So I picked up a new controller installed it and BANG we have power to the glow plugs. Im very happy to have a working glow plug system fires right up in 30 degrees now.

Usually the import solenoids that appear the same as the factory one is cheaper because its made cheaper. Mel found this out when his failed and he got a cheap solenoid. It did not last long at all. So he opened it up to have a look see. What he found was an imbarrasment of cheap stuff that could no way handle the amps required to continue to work in our trucks. I'm not saying to replace the fender solenoid if its working fine. Just saying if the new solenoid fails sooner than you feel it should.. You have been made aware of the issues. I keep one under my rear seat because I replaced my factory solenoid some time back and did not know about this issue. Its been working for a great deal of time now so no telling what cheap or quality part in installed. BTW the solenoid replacement was not the problem. It was my starter was failing. Fixed that later on.

Put an upgraded relay on it. Do it once and never have to worry about it again. See the link in my sig for details.

Good thing the new controller comes with a lifetime warranty.

everytime someone posts this, i always hear Chris Farley.

it may have a lifetime warranty, but what happens when you're 100 miles away from that store?

Very confusing thread. The original poster has the solenoid made onto the controller like the picture. Other people are talking about the older system with the relay separate on the pass side fender.

I will make it even more confusing; Talking about crappy quality solenoids; You can't even buy a decent starting solenoid for the starter without them sticking and the starter staying engaged all the time.

A quick word on Lifetime Warranty.

Some years ago I ask a parts man that I did a lot of business with, "Just what does "Lifetime Warranty" really mean"

His reply, without missing a beat, was, "If you ever bring the son of a ***** back, I'll kill you" .. with a grin.. but it always runs through my head when I buy something with "lifetime warranty..".

As it happens, I'm having the exact same issue with my "new 92 F350" with blown head gasket [passenger side]. No glow, and no power. It's a ***** to start with the blown gasket just to move it around anyway, but with no glow plugs, really puts the hurt on it.

Thanks for the post and the replies, I was going to make the same post, now it's covered.

I will be using my old Glow plug controller as a back up. Going to check all the wires and if they are good I will remove the bad relay. Put a good relay on and I will have a spare that I will keep in the truck. IDIoit lol Tommy Boy is a great movie.

I agree with the crappy solenoids comment. I burned up one from Napa and one from Ford very quickly before installing the upgrade. Here is a pic of the solenoid I installed

When you buy a replacement relay for a GP controller, you have to specify it's for a GP controller or you'll just get a starter relay/solenoid. Both are usually the same price. One is continous duty, the other, intermittent duty (starter).

The Stancore relay is on the left, replace the original with that and never need another.
