My 86 Ford 6.9 glo plug modual was upgraded to the new 7.3. The 1 that came with it when key turned clicked about 10times. My new one clicks literally 50+ times. Is that normal ????

No. Does it start clicking immediately when the glow plugs are activated?

Since mine still has the 6.9 style glow plugs, even with a 7.3 under the hood, I prefer a manual set up. If you can find a good, quality 7.3 style controller, they're better than the 6.9 style. Unfortunately, they also seem to be a victim of the current lack of quality that is so prevalent in so many other parts.

It has been upgraded to the 73 style. It literally clicks 51 times & still won't start

It's your time and money, but a lot of us ditched the factory setup in favor of the push button manual GPs. It sounds like either the controller is faulty, many bad plugs, or harness is trashed in some place. The controller only senses resistance in the system and that's how the length of the glow cycle is determined.

You have a glowplug or plugs bad, or bad connections in the glowplug wiring. It's the nature of how the controller is designed.

The controller monitors the current flow to the glowplugs when they are fired. When they are cold they draw a lot of current. But as they heat up they draw less and less. Once they are hot enough, they are turned off by the controller. The controller knows they are hot enough by the low current draw when they are hot.

But when you have a bad glowplug or a poor connection in the wiring, the glowplugs don't draw as much current as they normally would. This fools the controller, it thinks they are warm enough and cuts off early. So it never fires the glowplugs enough for the engine to start.

The factory controller works well when the glowplug system is in perfect electrical condition. But as these trucks get older, the wiring gets older and of course you will lose a glowplug once in awhile, you can't avoid that. If you depend on your truck, its not a good situation, the reason why people convert to a manual button for the glowplugs. I have a manual button, and have started my truck cold with 3 bad glowplugs in it. It didn't like it, but it started and I was able to do what I needed to do and change out the bad plugs later.

The connection is probably my issue , in my quest to save a buck because I was out of work with rotator cuff surgery I made my own wire harnesses. I thought I connected them good. Soldered them up. Maybe not good enough

In my opinion, the biggest upgrade is the fact that this style of controller doesn't stick in the on position like the 6.9 style is known for. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to be much better to me.
From what someone else said is about connection. Instead of buying the wiring harness I made my own. I used 12ga wire one Ted & soldered the ends
