7.5% seems like an aweful high percentage to just dispose of waste oil.

I fill my van 25 - 30 gallons at a time. I would have to dump 2 gallons of waste oil in with each fillup to get 7.5%.

When I burn waste oil, I generally burn 1 gallon with each fillup, or 4%.

Considering I use around 70 gallons of fuel a week, or about 560 gallons between oil changes, it seems I have ample opportunity to dispose of the 3 gallons of waste oil I generate.

BTW, if someone works at a new car dealer there seems a good opportunity to get fairly clean, light weight WMO that would burn easier and cleaner than our heavier diesel oil.

EXACTLY! I have my choice of what WMO to use. Usually, I burn 1 tank with WMO in it, then I burn my tank of clean #2 diesel. When it's time to fill up, I have my premixed and prefiltered WMO ready to dump in. So far, no problems.

WMO has acids and bearing material in it. The balck in it is soot that is smaller than 1 micron in size. It cannot be filtered out. It can be distilled out on a refractory tower using heat and vacuum. This can be done on a small scale in a lab or garage. The trick to doing this is getting the wmo to vaporize so the lights seperate from the heavies. The bottoms or heavies will be hard to deal with but the overheads (lights) will be clean of all impurities. It will be oil without any package in it like detergents and viscosity improvers. Small glass (pyrex) equiptment is available from any scientific supply lab. This would not be a good idea to "clean" your wmo and try to put it back into the crankcase. Oil really never wears out. It just gets dirty because its design is to remove dirt and hold it till the filter trys to clean it. Sure, it will burn and never be able to be used again. Water on the other hand wont burn. It can't be destoryed or burned up. Its always there. Sure, it gets dirty but nature cleans it by evaporation or earth filtering. Try to burn water. It can't be done.

I was thinking about it, I would like to have a seperate holding tank in the truck for WMO which would be filtered on the way to a metering valve (maybe a venturi type device) which would mix a small percentage of WMO with the diesel.

I know WMO has bad stuff in it. The exact same bad stuff that is in our crankcases every day. With ULSD coming (and the lubricity problems because of the sulfur removal methods) it seems we can come to a balance between using WMO for lubricity and any drawbacks from contaminants.

Plus, my trucks have 255K and 270K. What am I gonna hurt??!! LOL.

I say you should just make biodiesel. Sure it is messy and a little time consuming, but it doesn't have near the drawbacks of WVO or WMO. I say recycle the motor oil becuase as fixall says it has some nasty stuff in it. An IDI will run very happily on B100, and I run it whenever I can collect enough used oil and have time to brew. I do mix some fuel additive and a bit of diesel when there is a chance the temp will be below 35 or 40. Really biodiesel is not hard to make and in spite of the scary warnings you may have heard about the chemicals, there is really nothing to be afraid of if you treat them like household cleaners or anything else that you wouldn't want to inhale or get on your skin/in your eyes.

Permacool has a fuel filter/water seperator rated at 2 micron for $35 that you could use as a filter for WMO that would get it filtered fairly well before adding it to your deisel. Replacement filters are $14
