You guys seen the Detroit GMC truck on youtube with the Muncie and auxillary Ranger transmission? Pretty cool truck just way too much smoke for my liking reminds me of the old city buses here in Gainesville. I think they were 6V-92 but they sure did smoke and they all had that sound...not bad, just the smoke was too much. I wonder if they would be a little more civilized on biodiesel?

Rot Box search 2-stick and you'll find the truck I was referring to. It's a little newer than what you just mentioned and I know it wasn't factory. Was a very nicely done conversion though.

Now that i'm thinking about it :sly has anyone seen the "Air diesel" pickup swaps from the late 70's early 80's? They used a Deutz 5 cylinder in a GM pickup. I just remember the huge "air diesel" decals on the fender and the massive 12 electric heater (air cooled no antifreeze) there was also a big shroud to direct air into the fan. Those are great motors we ran one for years and years as a wheel line pump on the farm.

those are my babies. 2, 16v149 mains, 4-71 tow winch, 2, 4-71 generators.

It's REALLY hard to beat 38 cylinders of strokedness.

yes I know... the 7:1 red gears and 80inch wheels might not feel the same with a cat.

Thats my old engine room, I'm on a slightly larger boat now. A much nicer ER too. I'm gonna miss Alpine Green.... and I just finally got all the cylinders within 20degrees of one another.

Dang...there are sure some misconceptions as to how Detroits run LOL

First...ALL 2 stroke Detroits from the lowly 2-51 series with velvet lined blower rotors [as rare as hens teeth!] including the 53/71 series and all the way to the mighty quad tubo 16 v 92 and 149 series have blowers---Detroits do not have intake valves so the air has to come from somewhere!
But the majority do have 4 exhaust valves per cyl....... there are some 2 valve units out there -71 series that are prolly older than most who post here LOL

Secondly...Inline Detroits-53 and 71 series have the ability to be configured with blower/exh on same side or opposite and in both right and left hand rotation.

Third...are they screamers...ABSOLUTELY!
They have been called Screamin' Jimmys...Double Breasted Yamahas.... Buzzin Dozens [12 V's in rock haulers] etc....

Fourth...Detroits "Overspeed"...............It's the mis-informed mechanics who "Run Away"! ;Sweet :D

How does he power get from the crank to the prop? Neat. I've always wanted to see the engine room of a ship that size.

Ah, the things will scream... on flat ground or in water, but worthless on a hill. I remember having a hot 430 with 5X4 behind it that would do 120 on the flats loaded, but if it saw a hill off in the distance, like say seeing the Rockies from western Kansas, it would run and hide under the bed :rotflmao, Now I had a 1693 Cat that would do 118 on the flats that would go up those same mountains at 75 ;Sweet

repower? well ummm technically about 14 months ago.
so any day now. engines are currently rusting on a dock in Houma or Bourg La.

Mel, do ya REALLY wanna know?
ok, we have air controls, so when the capt puts the engines in clutch ahead, the air goes through a series of relays/valves. It end up at a junction on the trans. The air triggers the trans to shift, meanwhile the trans builds pressure to 275psi. This trips another relay for that same air (from the throttle) to push an actuator which is connected by a rod to the governor.
Mind you if any of this is set up wrong it'll screw up everything. Especially the delay in the shifting. Technically you can shift from full ahead to full reverse, but the engine and trans wait for a period before shifting to throttle down and rebuild fluid pressure.
Alot of the new electronic controls will smoke some clutch plates in a major way if the delay is insufficient. Thats when the engineer barges up 3-4 flights and yells at the capt. This is why in the industry we are considered the "mother in laws" of the tugboat family.

Now bigger boats with EMD power have air bladder clutches which are cool. The air swells a bladder thus making the contact, etc etc.
google up the transmission TwinDisk MG450

On that boat the Elizabeth the shaft is 28 ft long and props are 78inch.
I know because I changed them out in Staten Island in 07

ohh and part of the misconception about detroits smoking/leaking/blowing oil is due to the fact that they can run with more abuse than any other engine I've ever seen.
Technically these 16v149's could run with 6-8 cold holes.
Just because you have a badly taken care of engine running like crap doesn't make a crappy engine, it makes a crappy owner.

Properly maintained they are no dirtier/smokier than any other engine.... In fact all of these Smog happy engines I've seen, like cat's in tugs must be rated at full power because off idle or before boost they are WAY overfueled and smoke like mad.
