FIPL /Fuel filter access on VANS

Good evening fellow Oilburners,

I was testing the resistance of my FIPL, (OD light woes)
-Hooked up my meter (reading was in spec)
-Depressed the throttle fully
-Key on (resistance immediately went OFL)

Ok, hopefully bad sensor,
removed a bunch of stuff to access the sensor only to be stopped by the fuel filter (I have a decent tool inventory and used to be a mechanic at Harley)

Is there a relocation option for the fuel filter & bracket (maybe something under the van where there is a TON of room?

You'll have to come up with something yourself. Filter heads and filters are widely available so you won't have much issue there. You will have to come up with another way to get fuel from the lift pump to the IP though.

Is it still Philips screws? When I got my 85 E350 with C6 (so the c6 vac thing on the IP) i had to duct tape together a tool, with a Philips head bit, in a socket, in a long 1/4" extension, to a 1/4" socket wrench to reach the rear screw. I think the front was already gone.

I bought some hex head stainless steel bolts instead; 1/4-20 thread, 3/4" length. Same thread as the original screws. You might need a different length for the E4OD one. Hex head makes it much easier to access in the future with open end stubby wrenches.

I can have a look at my 89 E4OD Van tomorrow and see how tight it looks vs c6 did.

Looks like you've got an ambulance, which may have a different set up from vans. My 1993/94 E350 vans (with E4OD) all have the fuel filter mount under the vehicle, just forward of the loooong 38gal fuel tank. Fuel runs from the tank, 15ft forward to the engine-driven fuel pump, then aft 10ft to the fuel filter housing, then forward 10ft to the injection pump.

Should be a pretty easy modification.

The screws holding the TPS mounting plate to the IP on my 1994 E350 IDI van are Torx T-27.


I found by using a 6" hex drive T-27 and a flex head 1/4" ratchet, I could get to the screws without having to mess with the fuel filter.

The filter on my 89 isn't in the way? i mean you could take it off if it's a little in the way and put it back. i removed the filter twice on the RV and it never leaked.

Thanks everyone for the replies,

-My setup has t-15 and t-27 fasteners.
-Attached is what access looks like on my rig.
-I've got an electronic pump of some kind bolted to the driver side frame rail.
-my fuel filter has what looks like another (black) part attached to the bottom of it that interferes with tool access.
-Looks like I just need to relocate the stock mounting bracket some how and just extend fuel lines, is that correct?
