I am having some fan clutch issues in my 91 f350 7.3. When the air temp is around 95 or so the truck will start to run hot and my A/C starts to get poor. I have tried several fan clutches new and used and have never heard it engage and some people have said there very loud when engaged. The truck has all new coolant, motor craft thermostat and PSD radiator and reservoir. Does anybody know if there is a better clutch to buy.

Couple questions.

What clutch do you have on there now? Original oem or aftermarket?

Also, you say when it is warm outside, it starts to get hot. How hot is it getting?

Very good questions asked. We can remove the flat spring on the front side and rebend the tab to make the clutch lock up at a lower temp. I have only read how to do this but I think it was remove the spring and straighten out the bend where it contacts the hub. then rebend it about half the distance to the end as it was originally bent. Please wait for others that have actually done this. I recall typ4 aka Russ has done this a few times as some other members. Its very simply done and the results are exlant.

Was the radiator brand new?
If not, I'd say to hose out the fins. They can get pretty nasty.

Well never mind that then. Lol
I know on the 7.3 powerstroke we can upgrade to the 6.0 fan, may fit the idi also.

I currently have a clutch that was on a 93 7.3 motor that I bought from the junk yard. I bough a new one from the part store 2 or 3 years ago and I've never heard that one engage either.

When the truck gets hot the gauge goes to 210 then 230 and taps 250 and once it gets that hot it is very hard to cool it down. I do have auto meter gauges that are not old and the dash gauge reads hot also.

Anything added that could reduce airflow through the radiator?
Also, my original fan on my 89 (even with clutch rigged solid) was very quiet.

Do you have the shroud on the fan?

I have decided that if and when I need a fan clutch, I am going to buy a motorcraft replacement from one of the online sources like ebay. I think uhaul still sells some.

I do not have the fan shroud. The one that is meant for the truck doesn't fit the radiator and I had a PSD shroud but didn't think I needed it so I no longer have it. I went to ford and they said the clutch was discontinued. Are the fan clutches that are sold online any good?

of course, you could lock the clutch permanently, but I'd go for the shroud

I believe this is a lot of your trouble. Your fan is pulling air from around the side instead of through the radiator.

Start with a fan shroud and go from there. The Hayden fan clutches have proven to be hit and miss and don't last very long. I searched ebay for a motorcraft clutch and found several available from uhaul and other sellers.

If you really ant a motorcraft clutch, search ebay for yb467 and make sure you are looking at a genuine motorcraft part and not a Haydn or four seasons.

Thanks for the info guys. I will try and get a shroud and I would like to get a clutch that I know works, and motorcraft seems to be the way to go with most parts.
