Glad it worked out.

So is there an explaination as to why it did that without the IP on it?

The best explanation I can come up with is since there was nothing to hold the IP gear aligned, it was moving around in the gear cover and would catch on something. When I reinstalled the IP, it carried the gear true so it couldn't catch on anything. I have no idea what it was catching on because I never pulled the gear cover. If I pulled the gear cover, I'm sure I would see some scoring where it was catching. Ive also never seen the inside of a gear cover so i don't know whats in there.

Hopefully that explanation makes sense, and somebody else can be helped with my experience. It had me nervous for a few minutes for sure.

thats exactly what happened. i had the same thing scare the crap out of me. there isnt much room on the inside for the ip gear. the same thing will happen if you don't have the groove on the bottom of the ip gear cover completely clean. it clips over the stainless steel plate the water pump bolts to. if that groove isn't clean it will make the ip tower sit up and cockeyed just enough to lock up the engine.
