Thanks Selahdoor. I am currently running a diesel genset for when the power goes out.

A modern inverter gas generator would be less worse at light loads, since it could throttle back rather than keeping at a fixed RPM. The Diesel cycle is just more efficient, so it's always going to have an advantage.
