E4OD Problems

Okay so I got an '89 F350 Custom Crew can long bed dual tanks 4X4 all that stuff for free because the owner of the logging company I work at (in the shop) is retiring. Ever since I got it the tranny has had a really bad rattle sound as I would call it. As of a few days ago it will not shift into OD if it has warmed up. It does cold though. It also sometimes have a sort of grinding noise usually when I turn, which I have heard that a u-joint bearing could be the cause. I have read for several hours on tranny problems article after article but I haven't found anything about the rattle sound that is like mine. Some minor cases though and I've heard maybe loose flex plastic bolts or its cracked or maybe the TC is going out. It only does it at idle speeds. If I bring it up only 100-200rpms it stops and if I shift into any gear (r,d,1,2) it stops. Also I plan to check all connectors on the tranny to see if its wiring causing the OD problem. Sometimes it is very slow upon cold start up or it does not engage for about 30 seconds (thinking it needs to get some pressure or its just too cold causing that problem.) I also just drained the tranny and put 10 quarts DEX/MERC in it. The atf was completely black and I ran some tranny/power steering/hydraulic cleaner through it before I drained the atf. After that it seems to shift better. It also shifts hard from 1st to 2nd sometime. This is what my magnet looked like

it had one or two maybe 1/4" pieces if metal in it.
Thank you to anyone for your help!

Welcome to the forum. Thats a purdy magnet too. I can't say the trans is shot but without knowing how much time is on the trans or the fluid its difficult to say why they metal is there. but good thing its there and not floating in the atf. You might want to check or change the tps on the injection pump. the need to be changed about every 60,000 miles. they ear out. the electrical setting on them is at idle and engine off key turned on is .96 to 1.2 volts at idle setting warm engine. The 1.2 volts is a better firmer shifting trans and the .96 is a soft shift. now wanted in this truck world.

With all that metal dust on the magnet just draining/changing the fluid isn't going to help much. Here is what you should do.
This will flush all the valving and torque convertor. Use Any cheap ATF to do this, then change it again after about 500 miles.
If that don't improve the shifting and overall performance, then the trans has to be rebuilt.
If you change the filter, there is one for 2WD and one for 4x4, 4x4 has a longer neck on it, make sure the old seal is removed before installing the new one.

Does your rattle sound like marbles in a can?? Usually at idle in park or neutral it will get real loud. That would be your converter dieing. Basically its puking out the internals. No OD while hot is a pressure problem. It could be a warn pump or bad seal.

Now for that magnet. Some fuzz is normal. When it looks like a Chia pet it has problems:eek:. You can try the flush procedure in OLDBULL's post. It might by you some time. Definitely wont hurt.

I know the tranny has been rebuilt but I do not know if its the one from the gasoline engine or if they used the bond from the diesel truck when it was concerted to diesel. It was converted be for they bought it. There is an AAMCO receipt for a rebuild of the tranny and torque converter plus a shift kit in '94 that read either 457,000 miles or 957,000 miles I can't really tell. They swear it had tranny work only a few years back as well. I may be able to have a transmission person look at it for free and if the tranny is done my girlfriends dad knows a guy that swaps these to manual.
