I appreciate the you guys curing some ignorance. Remember, ignorance can be cured. You can't fix stupid. ;Sweet

On a slightly different note, the WTS light. I can tell the glow plugs are cycling after it goes off. The lights dim, the voltage needle jumps etc.

1. Is that normal.
2. Do you start when the light goes off regardless or wait for the plugs to quit cycling?

Being used and through a lot of hands, no manual with it when I got it.

Thanks again for curing some more ignorance. I have a lot of it to go around when it comes to diesels; but I am learning. :D

My sequence:

1. Stab throttle to floor once (sets cold start high idle)
2. Turn key to 'ON' position
3. Wait for WAIT TO START light to turn off
4. Crank as soon as light turns off

Using this sequence, the truck jumps straight to high idle. If I forget to stab the throttle at the beginning, she'll still start just fine but will be idling low. A quick blip of the throttle will then set the high idle, so 'six in one, half dozen in the other' as to when you hit the throttle so long as you do it at some point.

The Owner's Manual tells you to hold the throttle either partially open or at WOT while cranking depending on the temp, though I have no idea why.

The gas?....

How can the high idle be set before turning the key to RUN? The solenoid isn't energized yet, is it?

Oh, come on now. It's like calling a tissue a Kleenex. We all know what he means......

Trying to remember if I hit the throttle before or after I turn the key to 'ON'. I'm half awake in the morning so it's hard to remember. But I thought the high idle doohickey is just a mechanical device. Never really looked at it.

as far as I know the high-idle is solenoid operated..
I've always done the same thing as turbo elk. Never depressed the pedal until started, and then just a bit to get idle up to ~1,000 rpm for the high idle. Seems to start fine to me...

Mine does the same thing. The glow are suppose to cycle after the truck is started. My lights dim also, and the volt meter drops until the cycling is done. What I do is this, turn on key, hit accelerator pedal once, wait until "wait to start" light goes out. Start truck, tap accelerator pedal again to make sure its on fast idle, when glow plugs stop cycling, put her in gear and go. Hope this helps.

No its not going to damage anything by not giving it fuel at start up; unless its rocking so bad that it could damage engine mounts. And if its rocking that bad, you'd better find out why. I try to keep the revs under 800 on initial start up. Some people rev them right up to 1500rpm +!!! That can't be good for a cold engine.

Thanks John. That's exactly what I needed to know. That's pretty much the conclusion I had come to and actually tried that last night. Started on the second shot. Given I don't know what condition any of the fuel system is in at this point, I consider that a win. :)

For the past 5 years I've turned the key... foot off throttle ...wts light goes out....crank till it starts....wait 2 or 3 seconds...tap throttle to engage high idle...

And wondering if when I'm in a hurry I will start moving slowly not letting the RPM's get above 1500 after about 1or 2 minutes ....is that OK?

THIS is the correct and perfect method, the pump will give more fuel at"0" rpm for starting IIRC. As soon as the governor picks up the fuel it cuts it to idle or high idle.
