DT360 is roughly the size of a 5.9 cummins, which we all know can be swapped in. The DT466 is huge in comparrison, not an easy swap at all. I would try to haggle the price down a little bit, closer to $1000 if you can, but thats just me.
The DT466 is the better engine. Honestly, and with all due respect, if you have to ask which is better and how to put it in, it's probably beyond your current level of skill.
If it was me, I'd go with the 360. It's smaller and MUCH "easier" to swap. A 466 swap is a REALLY big project.
I use quotations around easier because a 360 swap is fairly involved.
Check out the diesel conversion forum. 6.9poweredscout. He's putting a 466 in an IH truck. He's also doing a 360 for his f350. I'm sure he's got a lot of info.
I'd imagine the DT466 is huge. They're both straight 6 blocks. All of the engine makers determined the V8 block was better suited for the light duty of a pickup. The straight 6 is very torquey and great for carrying a heavy load but not so much for just driving around. It would certainly be over kill, IMO. The engines that were put into these trucks have capabilities generally far exceed the ability of the truck itself.
I drive a Freightliner straight truck with a Cat C7 (which has a smaller displacement than most of our trucks at 7.2L) but I don't expect it'd be great as a daily driver.
Now, if you wanted to do it for the novelty or as a project I'd totally get that. Lol
My biggest question is what transmission would you bolt up to it because I don't think any of the normal transmissions would be geared well for it.
If I did do the project it would for sure take a couple of years for me to complete. My dads 85 4x4 6.9 is starting to go. But we wont get rid of the truck. So putting a big torque engine in sounds like I would be a cool and frustrating adventure.
