For my upcoming injectors swap job, what is the procedure for draining the oil rails before removing the injectors? Do I pull the large plugs on the back of the heads? Or is there another way to do it? How about the fuel rails? And does the HPOP need to be drained to?

Thanks guys

ive just pulled the injector, drained the hole via a spray bottle top into a can.
you can also set the piston at TDC before pulling.
no need to drain the hpop

Ah, didn't know about the coolant. I wasn't planning on replacing the cups as this bill is getting high as it is. There has not been any cross contamination of fluids at all. Just injectors, orings, UVCH, glow plugs and valve cover gaskets.

Are there oil drain plugs under the valve cover, or are the big plugs at the back of the heads the only oil rail plugs?

I cant remember if I had water in the system, but if it leaks coolant with the cups in, they are either cracked or leaking.

Remove injector #7 and #8 first. The crud will drain into those holes. Suck the crud out with your favorite sucker.

After you install your new injectors, remove the glow plugs. Toss the valve cover back on (finger tight). Pull the IDM fuse and hit the starter. This will clear the remaining crud from the cylinders.

So if I pull 7 and 8 first, then do the rest; I can call it good enough by sucking what dumps into those rear cylinders, pulling the plugs and cranking...and no need to drain the oil or fuel rails?

Here is a cut away of the fuel injectors, the blue is coolant around the injector cups. If you don't remove the cups, no need to drain the coolant, when the injector is removed, any coolant that leaks in means the cup is cracked.

Actually with the injectors out is a great time to pressurize the cooling system to check the cups for leaks.

Ok good point I will do that. DO they usually leak once the injectors are pulled? I have had no signs at all of leakage thus far but the injectors have never been out.

And can used ones be put back in or are they a replacement item once they are out?

They don't "normally" leak. But never hurts to check them.
They're held in with a loctite.
Gotta have a removal tool to pull them. I think normally they get damaged by removing.

Yes 7&8 first. Have a beer or two. Then the rest.

No need to drain the rail because it will be in the 7&8 cylinders.
