Grumpy Old Man
Mr. Bill, if I may ask, what was your average uphill speed when loaded up that much? And, what were your EGT's at if you had a pyro installed? "
IN the 2 pictures with the ole 84 F250 we won't tell of the great race-it was non turboed ,with 355 gears.
Pulling the doubles we went across michigan Rt 94 from Chicago to Detriot-I was kind of tired that night dont remember the hills (I don't think there are many ) at times we cruised at 65 to 75 MPH (I was in a hurry)I usually held egts at 1100 to 1150 pre turbo.Weight and hills??? a couple times over 26,000 gross.Hills all over the Eastern half of the US we did almost all of them.lets be honest some dodges and duramaxes flew by me (on other loads that I hauled) early powerstrokes got by ,but not like I was in reverse.I spent a lot of time in PA (all parts of the state) yupper there were times I was down to 40 MPH.I remember 1 time with 2 small crawler tractors in north western PA (brutal steep short hills -winding -no room to get a run-donno where thr road will turn at the bottom B4 you start up the next) Yup 15 to 20 MPH ,eyes glued to the gauges. Also there were times I forgot to make a run for hills then it was slow going. But for any 1 ton loaded with equipment there is always times when the going is slow.I have an opnion about that in a 1500 mile run the big guys (P strokes-dodge cummins-Duromaxes,will beat me,but i often has dinner with them once or twice on the trips. So what will I pay for the couple hours ao a long run?? Not several thousand dollars.Certainaly not a repair bill for electronic engine controls,They will pay for that by making trips with no profit.Except for 2 times (major engine problems that should never have happened)I always drove myself home.! time I limped into Maine to a shop only to have a 4000 bill for an engine repair that never ran right and blew after 70 thousand miles.
i might add that the engine from the ole 84 was rebuilt and supposed to be resleaved but when it was torn down in Maine it had been bored .030 over instead. That engine ran great untill I put synthetic oil in it after 200,000 miles of service. It died from a clogged oil nozzle to cool the bottom of #8 clyinder. We believe the extra detergent in the syntic loosend up some sludge or carbon clogging the nozzle ,there were 2 clogged nozzles when we tore it down. Had I known the bill would reach 4000 I would have ordered a reman engine but when I knew the extent of the damage the labor was already sky high. Motto-when on the road "Pucker ur butt up" It is goin to hurt.
So Warden I hope I answered ur questions. Mr Bill
PS The Enterprize pulled easy.Slippery (several hundred miles of snow and ice)cold I got there with phenomia-went hone (overnight run) then to the hospital. Then to bed for a few days.
