Do not use the autozone STP S3766 oil filter.

They have the correct part number and packaging, as well as the correct product in their pictures online.

The part in the box (with part number S3766 sticker attached) is the WRONG PART. ALL parts on the shelf were like this. The mounting surface to the block is visually different, I just chalked it up to brand differences like a dumb*ss

I trusted auto zone on this (for some reason....) and my truck puked all 10 quarts in about 2 seconds out of a gap caused by the threads. I’d be out an engine if it wasn’t for my friend.

Wix filter screwed on perfectly right after this whole issue so it’s not my truck, or a stuck gasket.

I dont have a pic of the threads currently, will post that by the end of the day.

Here’s a screenshot of their website. They think they are selling the right filter and are not

I just wanted something on there til I could get to orielys the next day and get a wix

Lesson learned

Fl1995 only! Don’t trust the aftermarket filters.

Is wix not trusted for these trucks?

I NEVER use anything Auto Zone sells. We have Auto Zone, Reilly's and Napa, and I use Napa 99% of the time.

Napa seems to charge too much for their filters compared to others. Locally the Napa Gold filter for the Powerstoke cost about $30+ whereas a local chain--Winchester Auto-- has the FL1995 for $20 out the door. I even find the jumbo Donaldson DBL 7405 online for less than $30 shipped. I don't go to Napa for oil filters only because of the price.

Napa Gold on everything I own. They have a yearly sale so I stock up and keep a bunch on hand.

I'm going to go against the grain and say no motorcraft oil filter on my vehicles. For those of you that don't know motorcraft oil filters are made by purolator. Purolator has had some serious quality control issues going on for awhile now. Google purolator tearing issue if you don't believe me. This issue has shown up in the motorcraft filters they make as well. I cut open all my oil filters and have had one FL1995 with torn pleats and two FL1A with torn pleats. So because of that I have sworn off of Motorcraft and purolator oil filters.

When I first bought my van, I had the same problem. I made a huge mess.

STP S3766 .Their book listed it as for me. It's the same size, but seemed to have a different thread pitch. Maybe some sort of SAE vs Metric thing. But I type this in retrospect. This was my first attempt at changing oil on that thing, and I thought at the time that all this was cause I did not know what I was doing

Thank goodness I had stocked up on oil, as I did not have much choice but reinstall the old filter, refill with more oil, and I took it into the shop, as I thought it was ME that didn't have a clue.

I watched the mechanic change the oil. No problem for him.

I had dismissed my experience until I read your post. Finally, now, it all makes sense. All this time, I thought it was me.

Thanks for posting!

Incidentally, I understand WIX makes the filters for NAPA:

The Gold Premium Retail filter is 1742.

The plain box filter for the trade is a ProSelect 21742.

They look identical except for some markings. There is a substantial price difference. My NAPA man tells me WIX makes both.

I wonder if this is yet another marketing thing to sell for higher price by claiming one to be a premium product, even if in name only.
