Dash pad what is that stuff

I got this dash pad out of a truck at the junk yard cause mines in way worse shape. Now that I’m cleaning it, there is this black stuff that looks like paint or it’s burned. Any ideas what it is and how to get it off?

It looks like a spray on vinyl paint that was used to hide cracks, could even be flex seal.If it’s dried and not tacky you may be better off buying a vinyl paint and doing the whole pad instead of trying to remove what’s there.

So if I try the same paint will it make the old color even darker?

You can go to an automotive paint supply and they usually have vinyl paint in spray cans to match your interior color.
May have to settle for close match but usually it’s an improvement over what you have.
