Dana 50 or 44 front?

How do you tell the two apart? Mine doesn't seem to have the marking cast into the pumpkin and the tag doesn't say. Since my truck is a F250 HD diesel 8800 GVWR I am pretty sure mine is a 50, but I am talking to a guy who has a set of axles and we can't figure out if his front is a 44 or a 50. They came out of a F250 with a 460. Any ideas?

Well, one easy way is to look at the hub where the wheel bolts on. If it is a 50, it is way more heavy duty, larger, and the wheel will barely go over the hub. The 44 is much smaller, and will flop on the hub, and have 1/4" play all around the inside of the wheel rim.

If that doesn't tell you, come back, and I somwhere have pics of the difference in the bolt patterns of where the spindle bolts to the knuckle that also is will help differentiate between the 2.

I see that you are using a pre-luber. I'm curious to know how/what you got setup for that, and where you got it from?

The Pre-Luber was actually installed on the truck by a PO. It wasn't hooked up to any switch or anything, so all I had to do was hook it up to a momentary push button (starter like button).

If you could post those pics and any other ways you know how to tell the difference that would be great! I am pretty sure mine is a 50, but I am starting to think that the used one I found is a 44. I am just trying to find an easy way to find out which one it is before I go driving out to look at it.

My D50, whose days are numbered with the pending upgrade to a D60 has an 8 lug bolt hub--like the D60 does. I don't know of D44's going into heavy 3/4 tons or 1 tons.

Easiest way to tell by far is the hub diameter, a 44 hub is about 2½", a 50 is about 3½"(IIRC, I'd go out and measure, but it's raining to beat the band)
Next is to look at the U-joints, on a 50, the retaining clip is installed outside of the U-joint, so, it looks like a regular driveline U-joint. A 44, the retaining clip is a c-clip, inside the ears of the U-joint

i think you should have the 50. use the vin lookup in the LMC truck magazine to figure it out. thats how i figured mine out. if you don't have an LMC magazine, order one from their website and let me know and i'll scan the page for you.

The only thing I've ever seen a 60 on has either been a conversion, or a F350.

I couldn't find a pic of the D44, but I did find a pic of a 50. The 44 looks just the same, but has smaller diameter hub, and you can clearly see space between the edges of the rim, and the hub, whereas the rim barely fits over the 50 hub...

I've seen a F250 HD with the 60.

It was a 1992, and it was factory.

I found out mine was a D50 the hard way. In my early (and ignorant) days of F250 4X4 ownership, I mistakenly assumed that mine was a 44. That is until the first time I pulled the hubs off for a brake job. I bought the bearing retaining nut socket listed for a D44...it was a no-go. Went back to the store puzzled and exchanged it for the socket listed for the "HD" axle and it worked. I'm not sure, but I believe it works on the D50 and 60. It's been awhile so that may be a little incorrect.
