Very informational post.

Back to the OP. you are going to need leaf springs too. The F250 TTB ones will ride like **** w a solid axle.

Dont forget about a track bar mount. The solid axle will walk all over the place with out one

Axle will be perfectly fine without a track bar as long as everthing else is kosher ans he doesnt us long shackles.

I believe a 4in lift minimum is needed to clear the crossmember of the 80 and up Trucks.

Depends entirely on the axle that is used. He could run this axle at stock height with maybe some trimming to the front driver side of the crossmember

Even with Ford's STUPID narrow shackle design?

Oh I know, those stock shackles are dumb, but with the stock length shackle and non-trashed bushings... yes, it will be absolutely fine.

also, if one were to want to put equal width shackles in, that is a very simple task as well, and just a piece of mind.

You asked for advice, everyone told you to wait and get a D60, you're dead set on downgrading axles because you want a solid axle, I get it. I am feeling generous because I've been an ******* lately so here you go.

your 78 D44 is 68" wide, your current front axle is 69.25" wide, you need to be aware of this, it will be noticable.

the spring pad width on the 78 axle will be 31.5", your truck is 36".

the 78 axle has a cast in spring plate on the driver side, this is ok because you are moving it over 2.25"

first, purchase 3" wide leaf spring pads, then cut the passenger pad off of the 78 axle. pull TTB out of your truck, set 78 axle under it with spring pads on, lightly tigthen the u-bolts enough to take up all slack, but still able to rotate axle tubes. set axle down with jackstands under it. I dont know what type of front d-shaft you have.... so

if its a CV shaft, the joint at the axle needs to be at 1*, if it is just a 2 joint shaft, do your best to match the angles at both ends. Once you have made sure you have the d-shaft angle correct, (dont worry about castor, it will be fine on your setup) and that the axle is still centered, tac weld the pads on.

pull axle out... fully weld pads on, bolt axle up.

steering is stupid simple, but you're stuck spending a little bit of money because your steering box is wrong to run the 78 F250 setup, and the F250 axle is 2" wider than the F150 axle which uses the same steer setup as you.

have fun.

THANK YOU! this is the info that i needed! i dont mind spending a little bit of money, just cant afford a $1000 axle. im gonna try to see if i can use my factory f250 d shaft but if that dont work then ill pick up the f350 one. as for springs, i have some ideas that im not sure is gonna work so, im gonna have several different sets handy. as for steering, thats something thats gonna have to be figured out before the axle goes in, because this is my dd. going to do some measureing today and see exactly whats needed to be done. like said before if it doesnt work ill just put the ttb back in, or convert the ttb to a straight axle. ive got some ideas on that too but not sure if i trust it.

Convert the TTB into a solid axle? :rotflmao:rotflmao:rotflmao thats good right there:rotflmao:rotflmao

laugh all you want there bud, i dont want to do it but as a last resort i will. IT HAS BEEN DONE. swamps diesel performance in nashville tn has done it and has a write up on it. my ideas differ from theres because what they done requires several inches of lift to clear the cross member. if my idea works then it wont require any lift.

That is just plain stupid. As if the TTB d50 doesn't weigh enough? Now add at least another 50lbs of steel to it?cookoo

Dont get me wrong. I like swamps and they are the ones getting my business for my powerstroke build, but that:eek:

steering is going to require that you get a passenger flat top knuckle and tap it for a hi-steer arm.

Or you can pickup some tube, inserts and heims. build a tie rod, weld tabs to it, and attach the drag link to it that way... you could get away with this if you do not have alot of lift.

I still think you should just hold out for the right deal on a D60... not all of them cost $1000... you just have to search and be patient.

Someone on here welded their TTB50 solid many moons ago. As far as they said it was perfectly fine.

I thought about the dana44 as well, but I will hold out till a dana60 comes my way.

Man it would almost be worth the drive to get those plus a BBF ZF or two ;Sweet.

If I didn't have a online waiting to go in I probably would jump on this offer though.

there is so many good deals near you its not even funny. I was 5 hours from you in louisiana selling front and rear 1ton sets for $800-$1000 with gears and a locker. Also good deals ALWAYS come up further west of you, into new mexico and stuff.
