In case it may be of interest to anyone, I came across this ad today. I'm not sure what to think as the ad indicates it may have tranny problems and it definitely needs a paint job. I really want to get a truck like that at some point as I love the 83-86 body style. I probably will pass this one up for something in better condition, but if it doesn't have too many other problems, $1000 is a practically a steal for a truck like that.

You bet thats a steal of a deal. any rust belters would crawl thru a river of glass for that. Be nice to know what trans it has. Probably a C6 but could be a 4 speed too.

Auto trans needs work. I wish I had the extra scratch laying around to buy it. You should see what $1000 buys around here. I'd link a few but they don't exist.

Buy it. Deals like that don't come around very often. If it's a C6 tranny, might just be the VRV (Vacuum Regulator Valve) on the IP is set wrong. Take it for a drive. Then report back with any problems you find. If you sand it down and masked it off, for couple hundred you could rattel can paint it. Those sanding blocks at Azone work great for sanding. Use a 80 grit first then a 250 or 400 grit to finish. Thats what I used, paint job came out great, except for a few runs. Ya gotta get one of those rattle can handles, otherwise the finger gets awful sore.

I have to admit it is quite tempting. Knowing my luck by the time the next paycheck comes around it will be gone. I remember awhile back I saw a '86 CC 4x4 and that truck was only up on CL a day or two before it sold. At any rate it is a killer deal and I don't at all mind a project truck at that price.

+1 on the vacuum valve making a lot of Ford auto transmissions seem "shot". I've flipped two automatic Mustangs that smoked a lot as the transmission slipped more and more as it got warmed up. Used to be about $12 for the VRV, then I had a perfectly good 2.3 Ford for sale.

Good luck, that's a nice 85, when Calvin says "who cares what it looks like" that's a clear sign you should turn your computer off and go get that truck :D

funny how we all interpret things.i read this:
"auto trans likely needs service"

as face value.meaning it probably hasn't been flushed in a while and could use it.i don't read that as implying anything is wrong with the trans.it sure is enough to make ya ask how the trans works though.but who can afford to run a c6 trans these days anyway? kick that out and drop in a zf5/e40d if you plan to use it.the c6 was bad when fuel hit 1 buck a gallon.it's crazy now lol.

i have a few built-out C6's in service where I have spec'd some very tight low-stall convertors with furnace brazed fins. less than a 500 rpm lag when flash stalled. adding high element clutch drums and steel planetaries, you have a bulletproof setup that will make good mileage with a 3.55 gearset.
bottom line, even if you buy the truck and part it, you will make all your money back and then some, just by selling the pickup dually rear and dually box.

btw...to the OP, if you don't have your heart set on this truck, speak up. Castiac is a 10 hour round trip for me and I will deal with the consequences of buying yet another CC dually when I get home.

I would love to buy it but I think it will be gone before I get the money. Feel free to go for it if you really want it. I would rather see someone here get it than a random person. If its still there in a week or so I will have my chance. There will always be another truck to buy, I'm not too worried about missing out even though its a great deal.
