Listen and let me know what you think

This is very quiet but sometimes it sounds like there is a rock or bolt loose in there. Driving around, 4th gear has a very pronounced transmission noise which I can best describe as what an engine fan hitting something, would sound like.

I don't know how common cracked flexplates are with these.
But I do know a failing torque converter can do that.

I had almost the same sound on my 99. The TC bolt/nuts came loose, eventually one bolt tore loose and lost all the oil.

Pull the dust cover and check the nuts/bolts.

I did pull the cover and looked it over and from the angles I could see (dust cover sitting an inch below held in place by trans cooler lines/tight fit) nothing appeared out of place. But I've read that they generally crack around where they bolt onto the crank and its hard to see from underneath.

I think I'm going to pull it and throw a better flex plate and a tighter converter in it. Sometimes its much much louder then others, this was relatively quiet.

Went ahead and ordered a TCI SFI rated flex plate, and a Hughes "Fuel Miser" torque converter (stall 1000-1200 rpm's) since most of the driving this thing will see is in town <50 mph.

Oh and getting a 89 octane tune from black bear tuning.
