How's it going? Long time oilburners looker first time posting. I have a 1986 f250 with the 6.9 and 4 speed when I got it it didn't turn over. After taking it apart I see it has a bent push rod a completely ruined rod and about 3 more bent rods and the crank is badly worn. On the rod that broke it took a nick out of the bottom of one cylinder to measures about 3/4" wide and about 1/2" from the bottom up do you think it's unusable?? You can see the piston rings stop about 2" from the bottom so it's still a ways away from the chip I will hopefully be able to add photos. Thanks for your imput

does the wear scar of the piston go down past the missing chunk?

I agree no bigger than the missing piece is I wouldn't get concerned. I would chamfer the edges so it can't scratch the piston skirt though.

I have no experience with this on a diesel, but we have a couple of 18hp v-twin Kohler engines with chunks bigger than that missing. They are on pulling tractors and turning around 6-7k rpm.

OK thank you. I kept going back and forth on whether it was good or not. I needed some reassurance. I have another 6.9 here out of an 83 I'm gonna use the crank and rods out of but the original pistons and rings out of the block we are talking about I guess I should probably get new bearings is there a brand that anyone knows of that are the ones a guy wants I haven't found to much info on this topic. However I already got head gaskets and head studs from cdd and some Comp 910-16 springs I suppose I'll reuse the lifters and pushrods. I Also have the ability to get a factory 1994 idi turbo setup I've been debating doing that whole thing also.

I have always used "clevite 77" brand bearings in all of my gas builds. I haven't personally rebuilt a diesel yet, hopefully in the next year though. I would guess they probably make bearings for the diesels.
