How do you retrieve stored codes on a 1994.5 Ford 7.3 turbo di.. no matter what I try it doesn't work

If you can’t get any codes your computer may be toast. What’s the truck doing?

No. That's because cheapie codes readers don't work on the powerstrokes. Especially a 94.5 (which didn't come obd2 compatible. But it's not obd1 either)
You will need something like autoenginuity, or have it flashed to obd2.

Water in the oil.. wanted to check to see if any codes were stored before I disconnected the batteries..

Probably wont have a code directly related to that anyways.
Either oil cooler or injector cups.
