this is why you shouldnt do clutch drops when trying to pass a severely slow driver.

it is also why i need a drag truck, so i can baby my F350.

Dude. I see your problem right there.

I bet that was noisy when it happened. Is that at the slip joint behind the carrier bearing?

At least you know what caused it.

yup, slip yoke destroyed, both caps demolished, little pieces everywhere.
needle bearings spread across the road

at first i thought i destroyed the tranny, tried grabbing another gear, and then i heard the driveline scraping on the ground...

luckily i have a few extras that only needed U joints.
60 bucks and a hour of work, shes golden again.

the worst part is that i forgot my phone at home, and i had to walk about 2 miles to get home....


a lady stopped and asked
" did you break your driveshaft?"
to which i replied....
"did the driveshaft laying on the ground give you that idea??"
i guess if i was more polite i coulda gotten a ride home lol

It always happens when you leave your phone! It's like it knows. Bummer that you had to walk, but at least your legs worked ok.

Sometimes when something like that happens, you just don't want someone to point out your error like that and stuff just comes out of your mouth! I know it has for me!

At least when you get it back together it will be better than it was before!

been there, done exactly that. Cept for me, it was trying to do a burnout (HA, HA) and broke something in the rear diff.

Luckily, mechanic down the street had some used parts in stock

i know exactly why it happened.
heavy right foot light left foot, and i have my spare tire on which is damn near bald,
because i caught a case of a nail the other day, had the tire shop fix it but i havnt put it back on yet.

Been there done that more times than I can count. After a few times limping home on the front axle I started carrying spare shafts in the truck because it wasn't always just a ujoint that broke. Never clutch drops either, I don't do that... Just rolling into the throttle but wide open it's too much for 1330 joints. Eventually got sick of it and had a new shaft made with 1350 joints. The wear out quick but haven't had a catastrophic failure yet. Next shaft I have made will be 1410. No more car stuff in trucks.

be grateful the driveshaft didn't catch a crack in the pavement and pole vault your ass into the weeds. say a wrecker do that years ago on US101 nb in Palo Alto. he went spinning the air, end over end into the weeds. lucky, noone got hurt, but towtruck stuff was all over the road.

Probably a little embarrassing having that happen at the moment.

anyone have a site that explains the series of u-joints?

being in the micro machining world, i tell my driveline guy measurements. and he gets me the right parts...
but lately ive been messing up, this is twice ive error'd.
i need to step up my game,.


i got new u-joints and while on the side of the road, i just threw it in,
something told me that it wasnt right.

i got her home and pulled the pinion yoke u-joint out.

the u-joint i had was too small to the pinion.

on the DL side i have 1.185 x 3.650
on the pinion side i had 1.065 x 3.650

the one i needed was 1.125 x 3.650 on the pinion..

my guy that has been doing this for 28 years tells me that they dont make a conversion joint with:
1.185 x 3.650 x 1.125 x 3.650....
i ended up buying another u-joint with the 1.125 x 3.650 caps and putting them on my existing u-joint.

interesting fact about this truck is when i got it, the pinion yoke was loose....
i know i know, CRUSH SLEEVE!!!!, i just havnt broke the ring and pinion yet, but still on the bucket list.
im gonna guess about .020 back lash on the R&P.
no bueno....
