You also have to consider what happens when the valve springs age. I would assume brand new, high quality valve springs would probably allow float above 4000 RPM, but used ones? Not sure if its worth the risk. If you can find stronger valve springs, then I guess that problem is solved.

From factory, the governed speed is between 3300 and 3800 according to my 1986 owners manual, but most seem to cut out at 3300 giving a rather large safety net. I guess 3800 would still allow enough safety net if you really wanted an extra 500 RPM:dunno

I still think you would be better off (and happier) with a used turbo kit...

I would think you would need to special order up those vavle springs, we dont have aftermarket "high rpm" springs available to us.

thats my plans in the future to special order springs for it, and even see if custom rods is possible:D

Well thats the things, custom anythings are available. Heck, I'm sure I could convince someone to make a set of heads that'll convert these IDI's to DI's, but I just dont have the thousands of dolars needed to invest in them. I think I heard that you could get custom rods made for like 2 grand.

Hey bud, I wasn't trying to tell you what to do with your motor, it sounds like you know the risk and you can handle it if something goes wrong. Rather I was trying to learn more about what lets go when if anybody knows.
About the custom parts. Stock pistons aren't very cheap for most of us. I seem to see $100 and up very frequently. Given that, if I build a 6.9 I will probably spend around $200-250 each for custom 6.9 pistons, to reduce the compression to 18 or 18.5:1 and bolt to a 7.3 turbo rod. Beyond that I'd stud the heads and the intake and add an intercooler. I think custom anything else is not really needed.
