Since looking for parts for my 4x4, I have found another truck that might be a candidate for a parts truck or body swap. The price is really good, even to make me consider dragging it out of the desert.

It is a 1987 F350 4x4 DRW with 6.9, 4 speed and ATS turbo. It is missing the IP, injector lines, A/C condenser and compressor, probably a few more minor pieces. I have a manual for 1985 but do not know if the codes are the same for axles , since the front is a D60 and rear looks like a 10.25 sterling, both not offered that early. It also has a complete interior and the little cab lights to make it feel like a tractor.

VIN is:1FDKF3812HKA25015 The build date is 12-18-1986, so it is a 6.9 for sure (even has v belt drives, early fuel head, early vacuum pump).

Door tag says: WB 137, Paint F384, Body LK8 (it was registered as a flatbed, now is a cab and chassis), Trans P, Axle F5

I am going to try to find the information on the interwebs, a search of the OB forums did not turn up anything I could use. Admittedly, I am not particularly adept at using the search function, because I am pretty sure these decoding matrices have been posted many times. I would be very grateful to anyone who has and posts the information.

I am considering offering $500, actually. Should I start at $350 or 400?

They also have a 1984 F150 with no bed but a nice cab and 9 inch rear that might be a bargain, too.

I really want to know the axle ratios but considering the reactions so far, maybe that is a secondary consideration.

it's a cab and chassis truck,so most likely 4.10 gearing.

I just now verified that. It took a little digging to find listings for f350, but I finally got what I needed. Rear axle is limited slip.

New question! How difficult (expensive) is it to change front spindles on a D60 from 10 lug 1-ton to 8 lug f250 style? And how in demand are the one ton 4x4 axles?

Or, does it make more sense (not that any of this makes much sense) to swap both axles onto the f250 frame, or shuffle the 1985 body onto the 1987 frame with axles still attached?

the rear axle isn't an axle that will directly bolt into your f250 (or an f350 pickup).
the frame is narrower than that of a pickup.the rear axle could work in an f250/f350 pickup but the spring mounts would need to be cut off, moved and re-welded.once this is done,it would still only give you SRW,not enough room to run duallies.
the cab and chassis sterling generally sell for the same price the srw pickup sterling's sell for.150-250$ range.
this isn't the extra wide DRW sterling axle found under factory 2wd dually pickups, which bring anywhere from $500 to 1k.

the front d60 axle,is the same d60 front axle found under any other 4wd f350 pickup.it's just got hubs bolted on that extended outward so that you can fit the DRW style rims.
they are easily removed to accept SRW hubs and rotors if you need the axle for a srw pickup.the 4wd dually hubs would fetch a couple bens here in the marketplace.
these axles go for $500-1k too as you most likely already know...'er at least this is what most folks generally start asking for them.

there is no factory 10 lug d60 of the pre-'99 pickup era.they are 8 lug the same as f250 and f350 as mentioned below by jasper.
only the 87-97 f-super duty (f450) got 10 lug.none of those came with a front drive axle.

10 lug wheels tell me it's an F 450 .. not a F 450...

I have a 450.. 2WD Dual, cab chassis.. would be kick ass to make it 4x4 .. but it's a beast as it is..

The D60? is it king pin.. ?

ALL this information is true. now how many sterling dually pickup rear ends do you want? I can't give them away! :dunno

My mistake, did not count the lugs, just went by the wheels. 8 lugs on old one ton wheels it is.

All that being said, seems a f350 1T 4x4 is not a common occurrence, maybe for good reason. So, is it even worth the effort? I am not opposed to buying a parts truck, but am not sure there is enough there to sell if narrow sterling rear dualies have no value and the front axle needs gears and hubs to work.

Thanks very much for all of the feedback!

at $650, it would be on my driveway tonite. the fron end is worth at least double the asking price.
contrary to what you are reading, putting in a commercial chassis with rear in your truck is not a drop-in venture. needless money will be spent when you can get a bolt-in pickup rear easily.
