yea those things pull quite a bit of power. i had my truck plugged in for a week at school when it was in the single digits. added $40 to the guys electric bill! my block heater doesn't work anymore so i dont plug it in. but it starts in the single digits with good plugs and good batteries.

Thats why timers are worth the money! A few weeks of use and you save $$$......but if yours doesnt work, its a wash.

I put one in when I put my new engine in last week. The difference in starting is unbelievable since its been 10-20 degrees here. Where can I go about finding a timer?

I have a coolant heater that pumps the water out of the drain plug in the radiator and puts it back in a Tee on the upper heater hose. I plugged it in for about an hour and I could feel the radiator was warm, nut it didn't really help it start. I will do an all-nighter tonight and see how it goes in the morning. The lowest its been was 30 I thinkLOL

you can find an automatic light timer at any walmart, home depot, menards,etc... just set the timer and plug your cord in IIRC they are fairly cheap too

Ok the coolant heater got the radiator really hot, but didn't heat the block up any. Do I have it plumbed with the wrong heater hose maybe?

My block heater draws 15 amps, be sure that cheap timer will handle the load :backoff

If I had a working block heater I would plug in below 25F, but I need a new one. Any warmer than that isn't necessary IMO.
And batteries are shot- my truck won't even start and we have a blizzard going on right now. I don't start work for a few weeks so no cash to get batts
My old beat up 6.2 is plugged in just in case but thank god for my 300 I6 who doesn't care bout cold (cranks SLOW but always starts)

the 1100 watt block heaters should only draw about 10 amps which I think about all the timers are rated for that but it never hurts to double check.
