Most diesel owners don't understand the need for routine coolant maintenance. In my view, cavitation is an old wives myth. Velocities in the cooling system are not high enough to cause true cavitation. What actually happens is that the true cause of corrosion of the block, oil cooler and older steel head gaskets is caused by the coolant becoming acidic. Diesel engine compression and brake mean effective pressure is so high that over time, CO2 molecules get by the head gasket into the coolant. Water plus CO2 forms carbonic acid and if the coolant is not treated to raise PH, internal cooling surfaces of the engine will corrode. Long haul diesel fleet operators have known this for a long time and monitor coolant chemistry, adding supplemental coolant treatment when needed. Here is good, inexpensive source of coolant test strips.
