I just bought a '74 240D and after fixing few minor things with the fuel system, on our test drive, I noticed a banging noise under the body at low speed. Once you are doing more than 20 MPH you wont hear it anymore.

I had a similar situation with my '81 300D when the drive shaft center support needed to be changed. I don't have a plant to lift this car up here in my farm to be able to check that now.

I wonder if it's a high risk to hit the highway in this condition to take it to town, if that's the problem.

Does anybody here know if the drive shaft of the '74 240D has a similar design as the '81 300D with a center support?

Thanks,

Burt.

Well... looks like nobody here has the information I needed.

I'll take it to town tomorrow to the mechanic and we'll see once is up in the air. I'll buy this car's book ,too.

Thanks.

Burt.

Check your exhaust system for rubber donut retainers. If they are weak or broken, the exhaust bangs around. There's also a mount on the bell housing to secure the front of the system.
