Bad high pressure fuel pump?

looking at an ‘01 M/t 4x4 5.9 turbo. Guy says the high pressure fuel pump is bad.

This would be the VP44 fuel pump correct? About $1000 sound about right?

What causes these to fail? He said he didn’t run out of fuel, which I doubt.

Iirc, those have a in-tank lift pump.
Sometimes parts just wear out.
