I saw a video where machine shop was looking at PSD that looked really clean and he was really impressed with the very fine bypass oil filter system and recommended them for everyone. I believe it's not a bypass in that is bypasses your original filter, I think that one still filters, only much larger 10 microns? The bypass filters oil in a separate loop down to 1 micron. The idea is to get the extra contaminants out but it doesn't have to push the volume that the normal filter does. Seems like a good idea. Anyone running one? How are you plumbing it? Any brand recommendations for the filter?

[Edit] MIght have the name wrong. Maybe it's a passive filter... Not sure.

I'm not, this discussion comes up a lot in the older vw tdi world, some say they have good results, some reported the cost of the setup and filter maintenance outweighed the cost of just changing the oil.
I've seen diesels that had over 500k with pristine internals, I've seen some with less than 100k that had tons of soot buildup all over the internals. In my professional experience regular oil changes will give you more bang for your buck and enginr longevity than simply slapping on another filter. Bypass filter may filter down to 1 micron, but unless you're doing regular oil analysis, the cleaning and lubricating packages wear out before the oil will 'look dirty.'

2500 miles is the factory recommended OCI for dusty conditions/towing/heavy load/city only driving. i did that on the RV because it got 3 out of the 4 a lot.

They were pretty common on old OTR semi trucks. Large oil capacity, long drain intervals, many miles, sooty engines. Probably overkill on a small oil capacity engine.
If I were to run one, it would be on an older dirty, sooty engine; certainly not a newer cleaner engine like a PSD for example

I run the dual bypass Amsoil filter setup. It seems to work pretty well. I did some oil analysis at 4.7k miles on the oil. The comments on the oil analysis were...

"Thanks for the note about the by-pass filter you had installed. You can see it's working well with your insolubles reading low at 0.2%. This oil has been in use for 4,723 miles and we think you can get at least another 3,000 miles out of it. The TBN was very strong at 9.7, so you have lots of active additive left for more mileage. When you compare you wear to universal averages, which are based on an oil run of ~3,700 miles, you can see how well your engine is doing! No harmful contaminants were found. Check back in ~3,000 miles, on this fill, to monitor"

So if you're looking purely for money efficient as other have said maybe it's better to not have it. But for me I just want maximum engine health and reliability so went with it.

If you'd like to see the full report with my other readings, I can send it to you. But basically everything was reading lower contaminate wise.
