So a kid at school has a 86 F250 extended cab 4x4 IDI that I kinda made an offer on just for ***** and giggles. Its in kinda beat up shape, but the $400 I offered him has him thinking about giving it up to me. It runs and all,but the bad thing is it has a cracked head. Anyways, how much for a set of heads? I'm thinking its like a factory high boy or something, cause it sits pretty high, I would probably just make it into a mudding rig or something, weld up the spider gears in the rear, throw some cheap used mud tires on it, lift it with some blocks, pryo, turn up the pump, and away we go. Has either 220K or 320K miles on it, but its pretty cheap, and I'm sure I could knock him down on price a little bit. He got the truck for free so I think the offer is kinda tempting to him. And at that price it doesnt really break the bank (unless heads are super expensive). Or hell if anybody wants the truck and wants to offer a little more let me know I'll pass it along, $400 is max for me.

On another note, I need JD and Mel to pm me their addresses right quick, I lost them somehow......

And Russ needs to give me a call and leave a number :D Got the message just no number to call back LOL.

A good usable head would probably cost you atleast $150, but thats salvage price. But you may luck out and get a usable one from someone here for that or less.

PM me your number. I've just over here in Bend and I still have the heads on the 6.9 that lost the bottom end. I'll make you a better deal than that wrecking yard price.

Dumb question, but how sure are you that it's not an F-350? AFAIK the "High Boy" variant F-250 didn't exist after the late '70's, but an 4x4 F-350 will sit higher than a 4x4 F-250. Alternately, there could be an aftermarket lift (and that's really the most likely option).

$400 doesn't seem too bad, even with replacing the heads...question is, will your parents be okay with you having two trucks? :)

I have a set of 6.9L NA heads and access to a set of 7.3L NA heads. The main difference (to my knowledge after talking to Punk and Towcat) is that the 6.9L head has 7/16" holes for the head bolts, and the 7.3L has 1/2" head bolt holes. I'm not sure if there is any difference in the valves.

The valves and rockers are different.
How are the valves different?

The rockers are different, but 7.3l rockers can be bolted onto a 6.9l without modification and will work properly (in fact, this is a recommended upgrade).

I've never sat a 6.9l and a 7.3l head side by side, but I'd be concerned about the combustion chamber area possibly being different enough that they wouldn't interchange properly even if the bolt holes were the same size. But, again, I'm not sure...anyone who's dealt with both have any input?

IMHO one way or another, because of the difference in bolt hole sizes, you can't interchange heads even if everything else was 100% identical...

IH/Ford updated the valves for the 7.3 to correct the oil burning problem that the 6.9 had, IIRC. Downside is that the 7.3 likes to suck valves from time to time.

Same valves. Only the seals changed on the 7.3 heads twice. Actually they changed 3 times. The first design leaked way too much. They tightened up the seals and not enough oil was available so the guides failed and valves dropped. This was on the exhaust. Now they have a very good seal that allows just enough oil to pass saving the valve and guides. A 7.3 head will fit a 6.9 easily. Demensionally they are the same heads and blocks. Nearly everything internally between the 6.9 & 7.3 motors are the same. except the pistons.

Well the deal is kinda off. Its an auto and I've heard a bunch of people say it slips really, really badly. That would put me over on budget, so I'm going to let it pass I'm pretty sure.
