So I've been eyeballing a 1993 Chevy 2500 with the 6.5 turbo for a few days and wondering if the rig would be worth the money. I've owned multiple diesels before so I'm not exactly new to it, but I've never been around a 6.5/6.2 GM. I've heard horror stories but I've also heard lots of good. I would primarily use it for daily driving and light hauling stuff in the bed, I have other trucks if I have towing that needs done. As far as I am aware, 1992/1993 did not use the notorious electronic injection pump I have heard so much about. I am not interested in another electronically controlled diesel, so is it true this is a purely mechanical truck? The truck has 137k on it, 4x4, no clue on the rear end, with a 5 speed manual. It looks rust free. Appreciate any advice.

If you really like this style/configuration truck, and its in GOOD condition, then its a decent buy. Good find on a NV4500 truck. That way even if the 6.5 dies you have a reasonable truck to re-engine (6.5 or cummins). Watch for rust and cracking in the frame. The 14-bolt FF axle was used in these 8lug trucks when they had the 6.5TD or 7.4L.
That is unfortunate. I put the 6.5 out of a 93 2500 into the wife's 88 2500 suburban with the nv4500 and np208 transfer. She absolutely loves the combo with the 3.73 solid front end and a matching geared rear end. Avg 21 mpg in that lifted boat and she slides that thing everywhere. Good drivetrain for what you described for your needs. I wasn't going to do all this myself, but then a buddy of mine flipped his 93 truck with all the goods and only asked 250 and that I remove the truck from his property. I had to at that point. Wife said I had no excuse and to hurry the h*ll up.
