the 7.3 powerstroke actually does pretty good on wmo mixes. Just expensive fuel system if something goes wrong.

That's the key right there IMHO. Looks at how much a set of fuel injectors costs for an IDI. Then, look at how much a set of PSD or Durapooch injectors cost    And that's but one example...newer trucks are not immune from parts failures, and when parts do fail, it's going to cost quite a bit more to replace them. Add to that the sticker price, and that does a great job of keeping me away...

This will be blasphemy to some, but if the power bug is chewing on you that hard, you'd be money ahead to swap to a 12 valve Cummins and do some BOMBing...and then you'd still know the rest of your truck like the back of your hand

Biggest PRO for me (out here in CA, at least).......NO SMOG!!!! I LOVE older Ford trucks (bricknoses specifically, but OBS is OK as well), so when I found out that I could own a bricknose in CA and not worry about smog, that sold me. Hvaing all that extra torque and MPG over its gasser brethren is just a bonus.

I've got the itch to get a newer pickup! Stop me, remind me why the IDI's kick butt.

Something is wrong with me I think, mine is really nice, and running WMO it saves me 7500 a year in fuel, but I still want a newer pickup. (must be the thin air in Colorado??)

IDI's are pretty simple as for running and to work on and they don't have a computer to leave you stranded. IDI's RULE

If you can afford a newer truck, go for it. If not, I'm sure your IDI will serve you well ;Sweet

Well if it helps any to know, I just sold my 03 7.3 PSD and bought a 94 CC 4x4 Turbo IDI (PSD was a very nice truck btw, never had anything that pulled like it).

I am running W85 blend WMO in my farm truck, and I bought the 94 for a DD to run WMO also. I have read a lot (sure you have to) and the IDI engines seem to take WMO with less problems than a PSD, not to mention the cost of injection parts......

Another thing to think about is spending some of that new truck money to make your IDI like new. I mean whatever you wish it had do it!!! You will spend that and more on a newer truck.....:dunno

The smog checks on diesels in Cali are for 99 and newer, the OBS early powersrtokes are not tested at this time

the 7.3 powerstroke does really good on 50/50 mixes (cold starting also) , and honestly it is pretty hard to go wrong with the obs strokes.

The glow plug system is light years ahead of these old idi setups, very trouble free. If I couldnt work on my own stuff, I would own a stroke, but since I can take apart and fix EVERY part on this old ford I will keep on driving them.

Thats odd that commiefornia is less strict on testing than Colorado.

Here even our IDI"s have to be tested (unless yours is registered in a rural area like mine is)

I talked to a dealer I know the other day and he said they don't even want 7.3 PSD's on their lot anymore because of the risks/liability that it wont pass emissions w/o them spending some serious dough to get it to past. Emissions in Colorado must be getting tough!

I have had 2 'strokes, and 95 and then this 2003. I just put a full set of rebuilt injectors in the 03 and at $90 or so apiece I'm just not willing to try WMO in it. Also I run 85/15 WMO and regular gas rather than 50/50 and the 89 IDI loves it.

If you read around a bit on other Biofuel forums, TDS for example, you will find that guys are having a lot of smoking and injector coking problems with PSDs on WMO. DP Tuner has come out with a tune for WMO, but the jury still seems to be out on it. Just my 2 cents....

Ya know what a UVCH is? Hang on a minute. I'll run out and show you, damn, can't get the rear bolt out of the valve cover, besides that, can't find the new ones I bought a year ago. Where is my top side creeper, not here, must be down at the other garage, man these PSD's are high, almost need a six foot step ladder to work on them.
I'm back.

Oh yeah there it is.

There's the step ladder. There the UVCH way down in there. Gotta check that turbo while I can get at it. Oh well can drive that OLD Black Beauty for awhile.

Leave the gasoline out of that mix, not good for a Diesel
