wow. i guess i really touched a nerve in a good way! y'all are makin me all teary-eyed! hehehe i really am upset i wont be able to make the rally. i bet theres gonna be some good fun around a few campfires. im kinda surprised at the generation gap on here. it is understandable to see the "well-seasoned" guys on here that in it from the beginning. whats surprising is the younger guys. i get tired of reading about some 18 yr old rich kid building up a $60,000 duramax with his daddy's checkbook. i do however love reading or hearing about you guys finishing up or just out of high school puttin together an older truck and running it. thats way cooler to me. maybe icanfixall touched on it about the economic status thing. im not made of money, just trying to do the best with what i can do with my time and skills. i know most all of you are the same way. also i kinda have a theory too. in a world of 800+ hp and over 1000 ft-lbs at the wheels, $75,000 show trucks gracing the covers on the newstands and the like, i think we know we are the "underdog" of sorts and stick together because of it. we may not rotate the earth under our tires or get 25mpg but we know that we can fix our junk with the money in our pockets and an evening or two's time. and for that, we kinda feel that weve got a proverbial "leg up" on the others.

Now there's an idea. Wonder what it would take to build a 800hp/1000ft-lbs combo for $7500.00 total (including truck)? Like the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge, but for diesels? Have a show and shine, drag race, truck pull and mpg run. Whoever builds the most truck for the least bucks wins. And no trailers ( except the one you pull ). Anyone do something like that yet?

Ameristar... Did you mean $75,000.00 or $7500.00 because I have more than $7500.00 in my trans than that in my trans setup already... So I guess I'm loosing already.... TeeHee..:D:D Jason at Diesel Power Magazine asked me when he was writing the artical on my truck if my truck was done or a work in progress truck..... Its always going to be "a work in progress". I will upgrade it as time and ideas allows. Money does mean something too. Thats why I do my own work. Very few have touched my truck... Ever....

I wasn't on this forum when this idea was originally posted, so I don't know whether you guys have seen it or not. It came from a guy off a Nebraska GM forum.
My favorite quote about it was, " OH, Its like plugging both ends of the extension cord into one another, Infinite Power.":rotflmao:rotflmao:rotflmao:rotflmao

Yeah, I meant 7500.00 total:D. I know money's tight and the GRM contests (200X Challenge) helps to keep everyone racing, so we should do the same thing for diesels. It would truly be a challenge because of the type of equipment we mess around with, it can get ungodly cost wise. But if it means having a truck that can be fun and keep the family fed at the same time that would help everybody. I can't afford a new truck, and even if I could they are not specced the way I would have them to be. I am thinking we should all keep a running tab on costs so if someone else wanted to duplicate a combo they can have a rough idea of what it would take.;Sweet

Jason at Diesel Power mag is doing a build like that. He started with a $300.00 farm truck and has kept the costs all written down and published in the magazine. I saw the free brand new turbo either ATS or Hypermax just gave him for being who he was. Kinda neet. He originally had asked me if I could help him install it "in my shop".... :dunno I don't have a shop where I can work. I just lift the hood and crawl around my truck in my driveway.... :dunnoWorks for me and sometimes it amazes me what can be done with nothing special.....

The other part of doing something like this is doing a lot of horsetrading and selling to offset the costs; there is no limit, as long as it's documented. This can benefit those on this site as well, add to the Marketplace and Virtual Boneyard. If you get it for free, just put it down on the spec sheet.
