Well, the impossible has happened. My silver truck was recovered yesterday. I went to the tow yard to get it and apparently the thieves did not do too much damage, other than hacking up the steering column. They need a new career. So I get it back without batteries or a glove box liner, and they started to take the dash apart for who knows why. Only a little bend in the driver's door (I think even I can fix that) and a missing oil cap from the engine. They sprayed the rear window black, I guess so no one would bother them doing nothing to the interior. Once it is back at the shop I will get a more detailed look at it, but if they didn't blow up the engine, everything is fixable for not a lot of scratch.

I am still feeling bad for everyone else who has been hit by thieves, but thought this news might help put some positive thinking out there.

I guess the truck was called in as abandoned, no one was picked up. And they did not take the oil cap. For whatever reason, they took it off and put it on the radiator support upside down. Then, when the hood got closed, the cap stuck to the underhood insulation like a cookie cutter. Then when the hood was opened again, the cap was hanging from the insulation. It was just luck that I looked up to find it. They did take the time to steal the jack and lug wrench though. And the air cleaner hold down center bolt. I'm guessing these knuckleheads were looking for the ultra rare diesel carburetor. Finding it already gone, they apparently quit with the batteries and jack.

When I went to the sheriff's station to get the release, I asked if anyone was picked up, and they said no. I asked if any forensic evidence was being processed, fingerprints, at least. Again they said no, that would only be done in a big case, like a homicide. I told them that if I found the thieves, there would be a homicide, but the sheriffs would never hear about it. They laughed, in apparent agreement.

Looks as if they drove it about 500 miles. Hope they appreciated all of the work I did for their comfort. I think it was used to go to the dump once or twice. It was found less than 2 miles from my shop.

And they towed a pretty heavy trailer. They stole the HD hitch receiver the first time around, in October. So instead of reinstalling that, they put their own ball on the bumper. I need to straighten out the bumper a little, it's kind of hanging low.

Well now... Thats mighty fine news right there...;Sweet;Sweet I'll bet they ran out of fuel cause your fuel gauges didn't work and just dumped it running away from it. Knowing its stolen would make them run cause any officer driving by might stop to help...:rotflmao I know... Fat chance of that. Just check it over for any issues. Be careful feeling under seats. Needles can be anywhere.... Take off some wheels while it sets at your shop and lock them inside... These jerks will come back trying this again. Make it really hard for them to take it again.....Sounds like you have a good idea of who took your truck by how they used it....:sly Glad it didn't end up south-o-the-border...:D

I am glad to hear that in all the recent posts about theft, that you had your truck recovered! In our parts, if a vehicle goes to a landfill, the plate number is recorded along with a signature of the driver on a piece of paper. This should have a date, time, payment (credit card, bank account?) on it...just food for thought. Check out local dumps within the area, it will be on record if the dumps operate like ours here.
