I was driving to work this afternoon, and came up to the big hill about 3/4 of a mile before I get to work.

Truck was in 3rd, my foot laid down and the engine was creeping up to 3200rpm's (40-43 mph). It was running great! As I came over the hill, I cut the fuel and hit the clutch at the same time, and the engine quit.

While rolling down the hill with the clutch still in, I turned the key back, then forward, waited for the glow plug light to go off and tried to start it back up. No go. Thankfully, the truck rolled right into the work parking lot!

Things to note:
Oil is clean.
The engine was up to temperature.
I was running the truck on the back tank, and burned up about half of it in the last 3-5 days. So I don't believe it’s the fuel... I did open the water drain on the fuel bowl, but after some good cranking, it still did not start.

Since I bought the truck this past Dec, it continuously catches itself. Most of the time when I am driving (i.e., the rpms are ~2000) and I hit the clutch, and let off the gas, the rpms dip to ~350-450 and then comes back up to ~700 as soon as it dips. No check engine light.

Any ideas?

If the tach was registering while the eng is spinning, the CPS can be ruled out as the problem.....

Just for grins, check the fuel heater ---being the truck is up in Alaska, I'm sure he needs it :D If memory serves, check fuse#22--30 amp maxi in the distribution box under the hood-driver side.

Here's a pic....I know it's from a '99 up but the location is correct----unplug the "top" wire at the rear of the fuel bowl...

hope this is of some help

Fuse 22 is good. I am on my way this morning to change the CPS. I have no idea how old the one in the truck is right now and I want it compleately ruled out.

As a side not, I disconnected the cps last night while trying to get her started - the tach still registered! Odd...

Is the fuel bowl full? I think the fuel heater is on the driver side of the bowl, the top one with the push on spade.

I changed the cps and still a no start. I have, in the past gotten the p1273 code -iirc its the presure regulator. I have gotten that code before when I made the engine labor, like when I'm in 4th or 5th and I start to get on it with out up-shifting.

When I turned the valve to let the water out, the fuel shot out of the end of that tube. It was defintely under some good pressure - I say that to say the fuel bowl should be full.

sounds to me like the sudden drop in rpm could be causing loss of pressure on the rails some how maby the oil pressure is down and the injectors arent getting the correct pressure

Maybe the IPR or wiring harness is bad? I had a similar crank-no start problem after replacing my fuel pump & IPR. The wiring to the IPR was stripped & grounding out on itself, basically killing the IPR. Cranked strong with no smoke or anything. I drained the fuel bowl to be sure it was filling back up & it was. Once I separated the 2 wires, it fired right up. Just sounds similar to what you described

I'm thinking it's the IPR as well. But since I'm not sure, I had it towed to Different strokes of AK. The truck will be pulling a fully loaded, fully enclosed 20X8X6.5 trailer from Anchroage to San Antoino, TX in early April. I need it fixed properly!

I'll post back after the truck gets fixed and let y'all know what the issue was.

HPOP went POP! LOL! The HPOP, IPR? and one other sensor went up in smoke. I am also having the low pressure oil pump replaced while they are in there.

I'm suprised that the pump gave up just like that - after letting off the hammer. Oh well.

Why the LPOP  What are the miles?

Reason being is the LPOP is a gear in gear pump---no real wear unto them selves---the hard start issues on high mileage/poorly maintained engines comes from the wear on the alloy housing---ie: the front timing cover.
And, that requires engine removal!

Have you been given the cost of R+R of the engine, along with approx $500 for a new cover?

better to ask now ;Really
