I just swapped a 7.3 from a 92 into my 86 F350. The truck was robbed of its relays etc before I got it so I need to figure out the best way to get some control on the glow plugs. The 7.3 has the harness and controller still on it, but I have no clue how to hook it up. Or would this be better off a push button deal. Please help, Im not good with wiring.

I prefer pushbutton myself. Others will say the late style solid state controller works great BUT ONLY WITH MOTORCRAFT BERU PLUGS...!

Do you still have any of the wiring from the old relay?

I have all the wiring for the 86. I looked it over and planned on using 7.3 glow plug wiring spliced into the 6.9 harness. That way I can use the bullet connectored plugs. I liked the push button I did in my 85 and it worked just fine. I was just trying to use that solid state deal since it was all there. It just looks like the harnesses are to different though.

DO NOT abandon your late model GPC for a push button system. If you do, just take the whole engine harness and controller off and sell it to me. That's a fine system for controlling glow plugs. All you need to make it work is to hook up the wires properly. Just compare schematics.

I use a new style on my 86 with the 86 harness. all I did was make adapters to mate with the bullet style glow plugs and cut the orange wires and reattached them to the terminal down by the resistor on the 7.3 controller. Then run another 4 guage wire from the battery to the solenoid on top of the controller. All that's left after that is a keyed on power source and if you want a wire for the wts light. I run mine on a toggle switch so I can kill them for ether but as long as the switch is on its just like a stock operating system.

IF you keep the controller, ONLY USE Beru glowplugs or the others WILL burn out.

Bosch work fine if you go manual and cost less. Just hold em for 5-7 seconds tops. A lot more then that will shorten their life and/or kill em.

Now I am getting confused. I have the entire glow plug and pump harness from the 92 still on the 7.3 motor. Are you saying disect the harness and graft it to the 86 starting system and pump wiring? I really not sure if thats in my relm. I dont even own a schematic.

Here is the wiring diagram I've found for 1992. Does anyone have a commensurate diagram for 1986 so we can advise Ray how to wire up the GPC?

Ray,

I have found the following diagram for the 84-86. If this matches your current configuration, then you can do the following. The names and wire colors I refer to below relate to the '84-'86 and 1992 diagrams:

1. Remove, tape off and make safe the wires going to terminals 1 and 4 of the '86 glow plug controller (GPC).
2. Remove r/lg wire going to '86 GPC terminal 3 and attach to the '92 GPC terminal that originally had a r/lg wire attached.
3. Remove the #6 red wires from the '86 glow plug relay and attach to '92 GPC terminal that originally had the 2 yellow wires attached.
4.The '86 glow plug wires seem to have a resisitive element, so I wouldn't use those - use the '92 glow plug wire harness instead. You only need the brown (brn) wires attached from the '92 GPC to each GP. You can ignore or remove the other wires in the harness. This harness has bullet connectors for the GPs, you will need to modify those wire ends to use the spade connections on your '86 GPs.

Note that Wicked97 above says he uses an '86 harness wit the new controller, so maybe the step above ins't necessary. If your going to use the '86 harness, hook it to the '92 GPC terminal formerly connected to the brn wires.

5. Remove the BK/P wire from the '86 GP relay and attach it to the '92 GPC - same terminal as the brn wires. Your dash indicator will light whenever the GPs are energized.

Good luck.

Regards,
