80 gallon fuel Capacity, and Quick Fill Necks

Thanks to Ron, Big Ed now has 80 fuel gallon capacity, and Modified Filler Necks!

While I was in Mexico, Big Ed got delivered down to Ron's house to perform his magic on. I bought the 38 Gal Tank from LMC and decided while it was was getting replaced, lets do the filler necks too.

I have been putting up with slow fuel necks since I have owned the truck and the last straw was on the way back from the Rally where I had to use big truck nozzles. Lori and I decided that this had to get fixed.

The fill necks worked great on a normal Diesel nozzle last night, I could hit full and leave it. Before it would be feather it to the first click, hold it up, baby sit it, keep a toung in my left cheek,....Now I need to get a chance to try it on a Big Truck Nozzle.

So the fuel capacity is now;

19 gal Front Tank
38 Gal Rear Tank
23 Gallon Transfer Tank in the bed.

80 Gallons Total and about $230.00 to fill up,..
With 15 MPG that is about 1,200 miles cruising range. Gonna need a better bladder,...

Welcome to the modified filler neck club. I'll have to do this to the crew cab soon. It is so annoying to fill up the crew cab with the stock necks compaired to the modified necks on the F250. With the big nozzle, I can fill an empty tank in under 60 seconds and not spill a drop. The stock filler necks on the crew cab...not so much.

No thank-you! I'm curious to see how that accumulator works at the top of the tank before heading up the line to the filler neck.
If it works like i think it will, then I'll build 2 more for Goldie.

I have several toolbox/fuel tank combo setups in my shop or I can make them for around $300 for a 52gal L shape. That would make some nice range with
52gal aux
38gal rear
19gal side

= Bank to fill it up.

yep, got to love the filler neck mod. my wife hates the 80,38,19 combo i have on mine. if you can't tell, i rarely stop

Yeah, but for me the range more than anything is about getting out to cheaper prices....its really nice when I can leave AZ full and not have to hit a pump while in southern california (paying the extra sometimes 50 cents/gallon)

Only problem is at some point the weight of all that fuel is going to affect your MPG and negate your cost savings.

well in my case its a good traction idea for winter, and its about 37 miles for me to the nearest gas station.

I have thought about that and tried to test for optimum...right now I am running the bronco rear, factory front, and 25 aux...did some rough measurements and could not find a mpg difference running on flat ground when comparing just a full front to all 3 full. Again, that was on flat, I am sure hills will make a bit of a difference, but so far been almost unnoticable.

The way I figured out what I wanted was like this:
Stock fuel weight ~305lbs
stock range ~500 miles

Modified fuel weight ~615 Lbs
Modified range ~1100 miles

If I cant find cheaper fuel within an extra 600 miles I deserve to be shot...But I do agree, at some point there will be a cross over. What started my quest was getting stuck in the Los Angeles basin paying $3.85/gallon for diesel when my previous fillup in Quartzite was at $2.65....If I could have at least gotten out of the metro area I could have saved at least $20 bucks.

Goldie always seems to get better mileage haulin something. Maybe it's because I gotta keep my toe out of the throttle.

Here's the tank vent mod I put together for Big Ed.

Thinking of how fast cool diesel foams up when coming out of the nozzle, I decided to try assembling an accumulator coming right off the top of the tank before hitting the 3/8" line up to a fitting in the filler neck.

This theory, if it works properly, should allow some or most of the diesel fuel foam to dissapate before it travels up the line.

So as Darrin knows, he's the test guinea pig for this design and if it works properly, I'll be replacing my vent mods to this design since my system is open wheras Darrins is closed.

And here's the final mod to the Bronco tank upgrade. The kit proveds the tube extensions but to make the pickup tube work properly, a little finessing is needed to make it hit the bottom of the tank at the reservoir.

A buddy of mine and I were tossing around the idea of building a tank setup that would allow for approximately 6000 miles between fill-ups. As his crew cab f350 gets about 24 mpg that would mean a capacity of at least 250 gallons. Any ideas for how to do this without making the truck ridiculously unbalanced load-wise and still allowing for the bed to be usable? He has a flatbed on his truck right now with a 40 gallon aux tank on the bed and the stock tanks on the truck (17 and 20 gallon I think).

Nice pics Ron. I used 7/8th tube and 1 inch hose. They really vent well.

Fathands. I have seen side bed mounted tanks. Sort of like side mounted toolboxes that hold appx 17gal each. with toolboxes on top. Biggest bed tank ive seen with a toolbox is 105gal L shape. Along with a 38 gal rear and maybe a 22 gal side out of a chassis cab or maybe a 30gal off a powerstroke. U might get close. but your weight is gonna cost ya.
Just hope ur pocketbook and the gas station can handle it. I lived in Nashville in 08 when we had the gas shortage. I had to ask how much fuel the stations had before fueling up my excursions 44 gal.

Anyone thought about modifying a excursion 44 gal tank ?
