Ok so I am a Diesel Mechanic Certified in Detroit and Mercedes engines and I own a 93 Ford F250 with the 7.3L Ford/International di engine. I can run an overhead on a detroit in my sleep, and could probably figure out how to check and adjust my valve lash on my 7.3 but am really wanting to find some good recourses to do it properly. (you know adjust what valve when the cam is in what position) some engines you adjust certian valves with certain pistons at tdc, and others you set while cerlain valves are in valve overlap, and honestly I don't know the prescribed way to do it on this engine. I am sure if I use a dial indicatior and when the valve is completely closed and the lifter is on the low spot of the cam I could set that particular valve but that is the long way to do it. If anyone knows where I could find the information I am looking for it would be greatly appreciated. I am sure my truck is long over due for this.

First off.... Welcome to this site. Secondly as posted above these motors have hydraulic roller lifters without any way to adjust them... Lucky us isn't it. Now please ask any questions that come up. They may not be as easy to answer as this one but their sure is plenty of members that have asked it, done it and know how to advise others how to do anything that comes up. this way we keep more money in your pocket.:D

Hey all thanks for the info I wasnt sure if the lifters were hydraulic or solid now I know. Thanks. My engine is turboed I have the ATS. One more quick question does anyone know roughly what it will cost for me to put and intercooler in this system. Like the rest of us always looking for more horsepower.

Hydraulic valves - no fuss setup. Detroit and Mercedes trained eh.....My area of expertise as well along with the Cummins midrange engines....I spent 1/2 my day looking for a broken wire on DDEC V harness in a 2007 Freightshaker....Took me a while but I found it....Code 39, EGR valve not responding. ....Typical Detroit EGR issue.

Love my Job

I am also a freightliner dealership tech. I work at Western Idaho freightliner sterling and Western star. I am the Night shift Engine tech. But do whatever needs done. Been spending alot of time finding and fixing the bad points with the new epa07 series 60s but I feel your pain in the electrical side of this mess we call freightliners. But beats a sterling. I had a 98 stearling leave me scratching my head for 3 days last week No communication on the J1708 We had 2 of us on it for 3 days and finally the customer decided the bill was getting too high for the value of the truck. all the wiring checked out good but there was a component somewhere causing us grief. Cant wait to start seeing the new DD15's come through and I say that with the utmost sarcasm.

Intercooler eh? The cost will depend on your fabrication skills. We know you're a very competent diesel mech, but how's you're redneck engineering? If you buy a kit from Hypermax kit its going to cost in the 1100 dollar range. Should pretty much walk right together though of course with the adjustments to make it fit an ATS(don't really know what would be needed) or you could find an intercooler off of something else in the ~1000cfm range and figure out how to give it air to breathe and fit into the system. Others have used ICs off of 6.0 and 7.3l psd.

I hear ya about the wiring on the Daimler trucks....Terminating resistors, ABS and satellite gear can all play havoc with the 1708-1939 datalink. I had a 94 Ford in the other day with an M-11 Cummins, I couldn't get connected to it after 2hrs of trying so I sent it to the Cummins dealership. :D I haven't seen the DD-15 up close yet, We are just starting to see some Cascadia's coming in now. I work day shift, I have to work today and I'm on call 24/7 for the next week. I have a 60 series waiting for me this morning to finish up....Re-ring the injectors (air in the fuel return line) and a top-set in a Columbia:puke: I mostly work on small Cummins, Detroit's, Mercedes but I put my hands on whatever is broken...I don't do a whole lot of CAT work, we have a couple of highly trained CAT guys in my shop. I get a lot of electrical trouble shooting, I seem to have the patience for it and I'm thorough....I use the tech support hotlines a lot - always worth the call.;Sweet

If you want a bargain intercooler then get one from an M2....The Warranty bin will be your best friend, find one with a bad tube, have it welded and bingo - freebie....I got one for my twin turbo Ranger project.

An M2 is a Freightliner model, the business class for garbage trucks, dump trucks, oil trucks and etc....Strictly engine work is boring, I like variety...LOL....I had to replace 6 IVA on a C15 CAT in a mad rush which rolled into the shop at 3pm today....We close at 4pm.
