If you need the duct work, look for it from a 6.9 truck. Will fit in the chevy better
Good to know, thank you.

If the '81 squarebody was a gasser then you are in for a lot of fun trying to register it as a diesel. I would not recommend doing this unless you enjoy headaches and government red tape. I would bet the state is in no way obligated to honor an engine swap in general. and especially one that converts a smogged vehicle to a non-smog vehicle. I know people who have gotten pre-smog diesel Toyota Landcruisers registered in CA but those were factory configurations.
They don't have to honor the swap, true. I'm expecting a bit of a haggle, but I think it'll be worth it. I didn't pay anything for the squarebody (guy gave it to me in exchange for pulling the engine for him) and I already had the engine from an F350 with a cracked frame. This was more of a keep-my-hands-busy project. I think one of the sticking points will be the lack of a diesel version of this truck to begin with. GM didn't put the 5.7 olds diesel in the 3/4 ton and higher chassis and the 6.2 diesel didn't get released until 1982 in the 3/4 ton plus trucks. However, since the emissions stuff is from the ford chassis...

I Engine swapped an efi engine in my 83 carbed crawler.. it's simply making sure that it covers the emissions calibration.
I personally think you'll have
Zero issues with a diesel date coded pre 98.
Will screwsome cry? Yes?
Can carb stop it? It's the P.R.K. So it's a crapshoot.
So keep us updated
You're correct from what I read. There is nothing in the CARB/BAR handbook that directly says no diesel into gas chassis. The guidelines are VERY vague. By their guidelines, I do meet the requirements for this swap. But I know from my own experiences and in talking with those that have done "crazy" swaps, the referees can be picky about small things.

Which is why I'm reaching out to this community for the things that came on the idi from factory. Things like the duct above could be what prevents this from happening. It could also be "90 diesel in a 81? sure, not a problem". But we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

I called the referee, to talk to a tech.
Chick went full prk screwsome on me, NO you can't do that (nannyfornias motto) I hung up and called back later.

Ran down the fact there was no dedicated information on the swap I was doing ' lo and behold "I'm going to get you a phone call appointment for a
?tech / referee? " once dude called me he was helpful with the requirements.
Not caring about how/where stuff happened, but that it was present and accounted for.
Just show me where this is sort of thing.
So play their game.

Ps
I have a VERY stock 93 with 60k on the clock if you need a pic

Maine requires excise tax paid every year when vehicles are re-registered - It's tempting to register a vehicle in other states which don't charge excise tax - however every state requires that its residents register their vehicles in the state where they reside - usually after a certain number of days. Local police seeing an out of state license plate repeatedly might intervene; same with a driver's license from another state operating a vehicle from a different state during a traffic stop.

Or get a Texas plate, I see so many cars here in Oregon that are Texas plated it's unreal. Not sure how it all works though. Oregon definitely doesn't crack down on out of state regs, I see Utah plated cars that expired... In 2006 still rolling around.

A very small town I once lived in had cars with no license plates. Of course there were no stoplights in that town either, and the law only showed up Fri-Sun to write some speeding tickets so it was easy to steer clear of trouble.

I have a Business llc domiciled in Montana and title my vehicles under that business name. If cops want to pull me over all I have to provide is license and insurance the registration is permanent no further conversation is necessary.

Tell me how numerous other companies are doing this and no problems. I can see the issues with sales tax on the purchase of a vehicle, but if you own the vehicle and transfer it so what. Pensky, Reider, most trucking companys.

the absolute best way to circumvent all this smog bullshavick is to build pre smog vehicles!!

the 2nd best way is to know people on the less legal side of things.
and own property in a clean county.
my 89 gasser, 98 diesel, and 01 diesel are all registered had will never need smogged again.

the worst way is to go through the legal system.

they put us through lots of illegal shenanigans, so fighting fire with fire is a way...

issue with that is the clean act crybabies here.
everytime you transfer title even tho its from you to a company, it needs to pass emmission testing.
and thats a really bad idea out here, they have taken F450+ of older diesels without DEF and such items out of service. personal use i believe is still ok, but if youre running a business you either have to retrofit or retire.

This is true with Commercial trucks in most counties. "We" are North of the Bay Area and do not need DEF or the other BS. South of Ukiah, about 35 miles, in Sonoma County, the smog rules do apply so you will need the latest smog equipment.

Atlanta Georgia is cracking down on the Montana plates also. They buy those high dollar exotic vehicles, and do not want to pay all the taxes. There is a bunch of people doing it, enough to where they are doing something to stop it.

Other notable crackdowns include one in late 2018, when the Georgia Department of Revenue compiled a list of cars that had a Peach Pass (Georgia’s toll road tag) but also had Montana registrations, then built profiles of where the cars had been and how long they had been in Georgia. The investigation and subsequent crackdown then focused on two individuals who had dozens of cars registered with Montana LLCs, and the lead investigator notes that monitoring the cars’ appearances on social media played a pivotal role in building a case.

I was told that Texas plates don't show expiration dates on them so they can be expired and still driving around with them. That was over 20 years ago though. I did know a guy who lived somewhat locally who owned some land in Texas. He always had Texas plates on his truck before he died.

Sounds like a great place to live!
