I have a parts truck that is a 1992 f250 7.3idi w zf5
My truck is a 1986 f350 6.9idi t19
Can I use the clutch and flywheel out of the 7.3 when I swap the zf5 for my t19? What else do I need for the swap?

All you need is the clutch pressure plate and disc. Your 6.9 flywheel will work fine.

Yeah. I used the LUK single mass flywheel replacement. I heard there were problems using the 6.9/7.3 4spd flywheel. Clutch and pressure plate will likely bolt up, but I think the height from the back where it bolts to the crank to the front face of the flywheel heights/thickness are different. Seems reasonable as it has to take up the space of the dual mass flywheel monstrosity it is replacing.

I just did this swap in my 86 - project little foot. By the way. I love the 86 F-350 4WD.

I might be mistaken. I did the swap last summer, going from the T19 to the ZF5. I have been racking my brain, and I do not remember changing the flywheels. Obviously the clutch disc is different. Bigger input shaft on the ZF5 than the T19. The OD of the clutch disc is also about 1/2" larger than the T19 disc, so you need a new pressure plate, but I just don't remember shelling out for a flywheel, I thought I was able to get the pressure plate to bolt up. Maybe I did buy a new one, and just forgot. Plausible deniability with the wife and all.

I'll play nice. The input shaft is different spline between the t19 and zf. The bolt pattern on the flywheel for the pressure plate is different. The relief in the zf flywheel is a larger diameter then the t19. Hence redrilling a t19 flywheel for a zf pressure plate will not work as the zf clutch disk springs have no place to go. There is a thread somewhere on here where an individual before it was common did the swap with a t19 flywheel. It is not really an easy path with the availability of single mass conversions now. The other thing maybe to consider is there is a balance difference between the t19 and the zf. Stood there in front of the crank balance and read the numbers as both were spun. Some people say they do not notice a difference when running. Depends on the individuals tolerance for vibration.

So I use the clutch from the 7.3 and order a new flywheel? What flywheel do you recommend? I’ve hear a lot about gear roll over noise with a single mass flywheel but I’ve heard bad things about the dual mass flywheels too

I ordered a smf conversion kit from rock auto, swapping a zf5 from an 88 7.3 idi into my 86 f250 with the 6.9. That kit is listed under the 88 7.3 truck on rock auto. I'll be pulling the trans from the donor truck this weekend and swapping into my truck next week. I will add an update to my thread linked in post #2 here with how it turns out. I'll try to include pictures of anything important but i'm sure once covered in dirt i'll be wanting to get the work done more than take pictures. Assuming the swap goes well i'll have a lengthy trip back to college and a decent amount of commuting miles to work each week to see how it holds up.

The thing is, like Nero said, a DMF that comes apart is bad. I also don't believe that there is a place to buy a new DMF anymore so the options are limited.
