I have friend that is parting a 05 6.0. I think I recall reading somewhere on here that the 6.0 radiator fan is a nice upgrade for the idi. If my recollection is correct what all should I grab? He says just come grab it and related part you need so the price is right. Thanks for the help.

I don’t think it will work. The idi fan spins clockwise and the powerstroke counterclockwise. Check it to be sure.

I recall that being part of the conversation but thought I read it went the correct direction. There's a very good chance I'm not recalling correctly. I'll take a look. maybe I'll just grab the stuff. If it doesn't work I'm just out some time.

I think @laserjock did that mod, but it takes a custom adapter and might be the 6.4 fan, I can't remember. You could search the forums for it.

Edit: I found it. He does use the 6.4 fan.
Laserjock's 6.4 fan mod with custom adapter

And apparently every ICE produced since like 1980 turns CW, so any direct drive fan also turns CW. They had some special CCW engines for marine applications but that's about it from what I'm reading.

If your friend’s glow plug harness is in good shape you should grab it. With a little modification it works great on an IDI.

In this case, it doesn't have to do with how the crank turns, it has to do with how the belts route and the way the fan turns. The IDI Fan turns the same direction as the crank, the crank and waterpump are directly belted together. But on the 7.3 and I think 6.0 PSD the belt routing (serpentine) spins the fan the opposite direction of the crank.

Well said! New wrinkle in my brain. I considered the fan being run separate from the crank direction like that but didn't go too deep on it. But now it is clear that just about any serpentine belt setup could easily do that. I've changed a few belts on my work trucks and they are the same way. It makes so much sense when you are looking at it, but less sense in my brain at the computer. ;burnout

Just because its a serpentine belt doesn't make it necessarily reverse rotation. It depends if the waterpump pulley is smooth or has grooves for the serpentine belt. If the waterpump/fan pulley has grooves, then the fan and waterpump turn the same direction as the crank. If the pulley is smooth with no grooves, then it does turn opposite direction compared to the crankshaft.

6.0 pulley is smooth. Fan rotation is CCW looking at the engine. About 23.5" in diameter.

A 6.4 fAn blade will bolt right up to your idi fan clutch, you just need to make the 6 mounting holes 5/16. The fan blades need to be trimmed down a hair also to fit into your shroud.

Oh, also if anyone cares, fan diameter was the same on all diesels in fords from the 6.9-6.0. The blade surface area changed but not overall diameter.
The 6.4 blade is technically no bigger than a 6.0 blade, but its hub is larger hence the bigger overall diameter. The 6.7 fAn blade is a hair bigger than a 6.0. If i recall around 25.5”
There are plenty of fan blades that would work better in a idi than a cut down 6.4 blade, bit they all take a different flange. I put a isb cummins fN blade on one once, but it took more effort than i cared to do on getting it to mount on a idi fan clutch.

Fan rotation,
Cw,
Idi, 89-02 cummins, all isbs, 6.4, 6.2, 6.5, sprinter om641
Ccw
7.3, 6.0, 6.7, 03- cummins, 6.6 duramax,

There are some ******* setups on the detroit 6.5 that spins other way.
Lots of mix matching can be done,
6.0 blades on 7.3s, idi fan clutch on 6.4, 6.7 fN blade/ clutch on 6.0, i have taken the fAn
And hub off 03 up cummins, made spacer to bring it out, used 7.3 fan clutch, 6.0 blade on 89-02 cummins engines in ford chassis, or the newer sprinter fan blade/ clutch ( electrically controlled) on a 89-02 cummins, or the larger 03-07 cummins 5.9 blade is a larger version of a 6.0 blade, also a oddball but the isuzu 7.8 duramax fan clutch/ blade is cw, ive made a few setups to go on idis. Thats a good blade.

If the Blade is trimmed down, and not careful,
couldn`t that throw out the balance of the Blade?

That is some great info you posted in the above posts.
