History, picked up a 99 SD gas plow truck, cheap not running,in 16, 130k on the clock, turned out to be wire to fuel pump broken, after we were told fuel pump was bad. Also had a receipt for a trans R&R for front pump seal and trans line leaking from PO, assumed radiator was leaking trans fluid also because it was bypassed and 2 aux coolers were installed at some point. So changed engine oil, fixed plow and put on good used tires and ran it, trans fluid looked good having been changed at R&R year earlier. So 2 light plow seasons later, trans is acting up, no warning just looses forward, so trailer it back, pull pan and drain fluid, still ok not burnt, magnet covered with sludge and some visible metal glitter in oil, no big pieces, figure this shouldn't be normal for less then 10k miles on trans oil change, so replace filter and put replacement drain plug pan on it and flush out fluid by pumping thru return line 5-6 qts, refill and test, truck,it does move but slips in forward and doesn't accelerate with RPM increase, reverse seems solid and did chirp tire, and fluid did seem to get warm pretty quick 5 mins or less 100 deg. Other trans related issues are the column shifter is quite loose as to be expected with a plow truck and some cobble ( hose clamps) on cable connection at trans ( range selector), also OD button is broke at shifter and has been cobbled, had a friend put his scanner on it but found no codes, so we figured to replace trans with used unit based on what we see with oil and the slippage and having no other means to trouble shoot other then all the opinions we have gotten locally. Any advice from those that are knowledgeable on these trans?
Also anything we should do when we put in used trans? tricks, simple fixes, minor upgrades?
Plan on draining converter, comes with used trans, installing trans, new range selector, filter and flush new
fluid thru, add inline filter and possible replace radiator to return to stock cooling, prolly wont need aux, coolers for plowing over stock rad ability in the winter, and probably contaminated also.
Also would a new TQ be a good idea? hate to put a new one in and find out used trans is junk, or not put one in and find out TQ is bad, guess its a gamble either way.
