Just a quick question.
Can you remove the tail shaft from a 2wd 4R100 and bolt a transfercase in its place without any issues?

And I have read a few things about late 2002 F250 4R100 not being compatible with 99.5 thru early 2002 trucks. Can anyone clarify this?

Most likely the output shaft is different.
Don't know why 99.5 to 02 would be different.
Edit: oops. Nevermind. If your truck is early 99, the newer trans isn't compatible.
The newer versions use pwm for torque converter control. Early did not.

I can't remember about the difference, I might be thinking of something else lol
But thank you anyway
I was reading somewhere you could interchange the 2wd and 4wd trannys but I've never done it with the exception of the old ZF5's

Ok
I was educated.....
Apparently the 2wd and 4wd trannys are interchangeable.
But
You've got to change the output shaft on the 2wd transmission to a 4wd output shaft due to the length.
Otherwise the transfer case will not mount to it.

To remove the output shaft, the tranny has to be completely disassembled.

All 4R100s are interchangeable. There are some early units that are non PWM. But they can be interchanged too.

Iirc thats just a solenoid pack difference.

Don't the whole tail housing have to be changed also. 4WD tail has the TC mounting flange.

The 2WD extension housing gets replaced with a 4WD extension housing. The later (99 and up) housing has to be used. Later housings are cast steel with a hole for the OSS.
