The wife and I are proud to host the 2025 Oilburners Rally in our nation’s capital!

When: July 13-20 2025

Where: Historic Cherry Hill Park

College Park Maryland

The amenities at the campground are really great and a drive-through tour on a weekend in August the place wasn’t terribly packed.

There is no shortage of things to see or do in the area. If you wanted to spend the entire week just crawling through the Smithsonian Museums it’s easily doable. Additionally, there is the National Zoo, all of the monuments, Arlington National Cemetery, all very near by. All of the Smithsonian museums and the national Zoo are free admission but many require you to pay for parking.

The best way to get around the city itself is generally to take the metro. Conveniently, you can catch a metro bus right at the campground that will take you to the Greenbelt metro station to catch the train or you can drive over and park. The campground also offers direct bussing into town for a fee if you prefer that. Check out the website for details. As we get closer, if folks want to do an organized tour we can look into that.

Other possible excursions would be:

Udvar-Hazy Air and space museum

National Aquarium in Baltimore

If you are tired of the city, it’s a short drive to any number of local wineries or breweries.

Linganore is one of the larger in Maryland

There are Civil War battlefields such as Antietam. It’s also a fairly short hop over to Harper’s Ferry or Mount Vernon.

There are casinos, amusement parks, concert venues, practically anything you’d like to do. If there’s something specific you’d like to do and want help figuring things out, feel free to drop me a DM.

As usual, we will probably organize a couple excursions but generally, folks are free to do as they please. We are here to help facilitate and help make your vacation as great as it can be. If you can’t commit to an entire, week, feel free to drop in when you can. If you are in the area, I think you can get a visitor pass to come hang out for the day as well. I’ll try to get a loose schedule of the things we are planning (pot luck, planned excursions, etc.) out as we get closer for planning purposes.

Booking:

I know it’s a bit earlier than we would normally start this, but as we’ve all learned, camping has become popular so I wanted to give folks the best chance at booking accommodations that best suits their needs.

To make reservations, call the concierge at 240-484-8917 and ask for Cathy or Nancy. Tell them you are part of the Oilburners Rally Group. Cathy has been great to work with so far.

As for sites, I currently have 10 RV sites, 3 cabins and 2 pods on reserve. The pods are pretty similar to the primitive cabins you’d find at a KOA. The cabins are very nicely furnished. They also have Yurts and tent sites available. Right now, pretty much anything is an option. I’d encourage folks to hit their website and decide what will work best for you. You do not have to choose what’s been reserved if you want to do something else. The things that are on hold are being held until the end of the year at 2024 pricing. You can book anytime you like but if you book after the hold expires, it will be whatever current prices are just FYI. If you book outside the hold window, I’m told they will do their best to keep us together and it’s usually not an issue for RV spots.

Prices:

Standard RV sites are ~$95/ night with our discount.

Pods are ~ $210 per night

Cabins range from $315-360 per night.

Many of the cabins are large enough that folks could certainly go together and split one if they wanted. Reservations generally require a one night deposit. She did mention there is a discount for military if that applies to you so be sure to ask.

I am on site 1423 and they are allowing us to use site 1425 as a gathering area. They are also holding site 1620 for us. If someone wants to grab it, it will expand our gathering area and we will have that whole corner to ourselves.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you again for allowing us the privilege of hosting our summer get-together.

The date to reserve at 2024 rates is fast approaching.

Just a reminder of the cancellation policy.

One week after booking is free cancellation.

After one week but more than 2 weeks from arrival, it is 25% of the deposit (one night) cancellation fee, but modifications are free if you need to shift or shorten your dates.

From 2 weeks of arrival to 1 day before arrival, the fee is 50% of the deposit or modify for 25%.

Same day mods or cancellations are 50% of the deposit.

The moral of the story is it’s a pretty low regret decision to go ahead and book even if you end up having to cancel later.

Rally Update!!

Time is almost up to lock in your 2024 rates on your reservation. The cabin holds will expire at the end of the year. The RV sites are going to be held until the end of January.

Fear not! If you haven’t been able to make a reservation because you just can’t commit, you can reserve anytime at current pricing for that time and they will try to put you with the group (RV sites shouldn’t be an issue). Please note that they do dynamic pricing based on timing and availability (think like buying plane tickets or hotel rooms in advance) so it will most likely be cheaper if you reserve sooner than later.

I don’t think they do dynamic pricing on RV sites and the 2025 price was just a few dollars more per night than the 2024 price.

Any questions, please reach out.

Well folks, we are about 4 months out to summer rally time. I’m starting to think about schedules and what group events we may want to do. If you have anything specific you want to do, please don’t hesitate to reach out and I will do my best to facilitate.

Activities that were kicked around:

National Zoo
Udvar-Hazy Air and Space museum
Smithsonian museums
Monuments Tour
Arlington National Cemetery
National Aquarium
Trip to a winery/brewery/distillery (all are possible)

If you have something else in mind, let me know.

If you haven’t booked yet, I don’t know what the status might be for cabins but I strongly suspect there are plenty of RV sites available. Even if you can’t do the entire week, we’d be glad to have you for any portion even if it’s just to stop by and say hi.

It’s almost time!

Why is it that Rally prep almost always ends up with the bed off my truck???

You must be registered for see images attach

We are a little over a month from Rally time!

Here’s what we are thinking for outings in no particular order just yet.

National Zoo

Monument/mall tour

Smithsonian Museums

My personal favorites are the American and Natural history museums. Air and Space down town is pretty good too.

Arlington National Cemetery

Udvar-Hazy Air and space museum

Hands-down my favorite.

The great thing about all of those options is short of parking and transport, I believe they are all free admission.

National Aquarium

If you are so inclined Six Flags America is fairly close and this will be the last year the park is open acccording to advertisements I’ve seen.

There have been discussions of a possible wine tour. Maryland has numerous craft breweries and wineries to visit.

Some of these locations do require tickets for entry so if there’s a specific date or time you want to visit keep that in mind.

In keeping tradition, we will probably do a taco Tuesday and probably a small pot luck. We also plan on doing an ice cream social. I promise the ice cream will be frozen this year… maybe even home made if I have time.

As always, we are here to facilitate not dictate. If there is something do or don’t want to do that’s totally cool. We are here to help you enjoy your vacation.

I’m working on putting together info packets so if there’s something else you’d like to explore let us know if we can help.

If you haven’t booked there’s likely still plenty of RV sites. I have not checked on cabin/tent/yurt sites.

Wife and I are looking forward to seeing folks.

Do you have a vague itinerary? I can't swing whole thing but want to come try to do a few nights with the girls!

Myself (and I'll drag the kids haha) are super interested in the museums. Steve is coming so he would love a craft brewery visit. We have season passes to an amusement park so we would skip six flags, and it looks like this campground is also an awesome place to just hang at.

Our work lives are pretty intense so even if we don't get off campground much, we will have fun for sure

My favorite is always the convoys so if we're being really honest I'm down for just following the group heehee

I need to finish my r134a conversion and chase down my new air intrusion before we go!

Just got a whim to check out the rally dates and found it to be this week. :) Not sure what days yet I will be there but on the surface Wed-Sat sometime. My 1990 has been down for 4 years waiting for me to get my act together and fix the motor. Thinking it has the cavitation issue since I turbo-ed the truck about 50-60 k miles ago. Don't have any excuses other than other stuff getting on the list first. Been driving a 2000 F250 7.3 since. When the group gets an idea of activities please post here. Looking like a day pass for the campground. Maybe looking for someone with only one vehicle to park my truck at and share the cost for a night or two since it will be only me on this trip, but I can drive home since its only about 55 miles away. Its been awhile since attending a rally and hope to see some old friends.
