I have an 01 Sooooperdoooty with a tired, missing, helicoiled motor in it. Have access to a serpentined 7.3L IDI complete here locally..
Question is:
Regarding bolt pattern/adapters... What will be required to put the 7.3L IDI in the place of the 5.4L ... Stock computer should technically stay in to calibrate transmission. Annnnd go.

***Disclaimer*** I give no **** to hear about emissions and putting an older motor in a newer truck. I am interested only in the conversion standpoint. Engine to transmission mostly. What converter, flywheel, etc.

What can I expect. 5.4L is getting a palsy 12mpg and runs like a opossum across the road even with custom SCT tunes. :puke:

I would say the transmission would not bolt up, and doubt there is an easy locatable adapter. It may be easier to do engine and transmission.... run a few mechanical gauges since the instrument cluster may be run by the 5.4L PCM. Custom engine mounts...... Even if you could get an adapter for the transmission, it would not be happy since the IDI is not going to feed all the signals to the PCM it is expecting....... Would also need to eliminate the fuel pump in the tank since it is a hi pressure pump.

That is just a couple things off the top of my head.....

It find 7.3 psd mounts and a psd 4r100(??) and then it will bolt right in except the e4od and 4r100 use a 6 stud converter instead of a 4 stud. Run mechanical gauges and an aftermarket controller.

Or swap to standard trans.

I seen an ad one time for an 01 with an idi for sale and it has been talked about before in here.

Best of luck!!

any idea how the IDI bolted up to the SD cross member? I will be doing this soon (idi in an 06 frame), wondering if it would just drop right in...

I don't know, I'm sure the 6.0's pan wasn't the same shape as ours but I never paid attention to one either.

7.3 turbo
190 @ 3,000 RPM (7.3 L turbo)
388 @ 1,400 RPM (7.3 L turbo)

5.4 triton
1997–2004 Ford F-Series, 2-valve SOHC, 260 hp (194 kW) and 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) ratings for 1999 and later model years

Mileage will depend on the transmission, but it seems like a lot of work and devaluation of your pickup for very little gain :dunno
