Both new starters look identical to the one I removed. but after hooking up wires and tuoching screwdriver across both posts, neither will kick out bendics , they only spin. this is without mounting to engine, to check function before installing

When you say you are going across post which ones are you going across. You should be going across the terminal that the battery cable connects to and the small terminal. If you are going across to the terminal that goes into the starter that is all it will do; spin it will not throw out the bendix. Just trying to get it clear in my head.

This sounds like the issue. If you're not energizing the signal wire, it is not operating the solenoid which is what throws the bendix.

James
You are both correct, I was jumping across both large terminals. Seemmmms like when I over heated my starter it also burnt the signal wire. Thank you for your help.

Well I thought we were onto something, but I reinstalled the starter and it still will not engage flywheel after running new switch wire from starter to fender mounted solenoid. So I am still at a loss on what the problem could be. I did verify that rhe bendics, throws on the bench, with a 12 volt battery.

So try jumping from the battery to the signal terminals on the starter. IF IT IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, MAKE SURE ITS IN NEUTRAL BEFOREHAND.

As was said make sure you are in neutral then you should be able to jump from the battery cable terminal on the starter to the small terminal and it should work if your cables are good. Since you have verified that the starter works on the bench follow through testing it on the truck.

All three bolts are in and tight? What sort of sound are you getting from the starter when on the truck. Solenoid on the right fender has power in and out on the big terminals when energized? Bendix gear turns free one way and locks up the other?

Sorry I should have posted my last find. The starters I bought off of Amazon are apparently not the correct starter for the IDI. THE NOSECONE . Is about a half inch shorter than my original starter. I should have noticed this sooner but I did not. I finally got my wife to come out and turn key while I looked at starter through flywheel cover removed. It is working properly just not long enuf to engage flywheel.

Look at the starter closely. Is there a spacer on the nose cone? If so remove the spacer and the starter should work. If no spacer than yes you will need a different starter. Sounds like you have one for a powerstroke.
