hey guys, got a problem with my 7.3 idi, it stalled on the road back home, after that i tried to restart it but just got a looong crank, finally starts but died couple seconds later, the morning after i took a look in the fuel filter and its almost empty, i have no visible leaks on the engine, but my rear tank is humid, front tank is good and normally it runs on both, any tricks to find the problem? Lift pump, injectors and IP is only a couple months old.

You can get a gas can and fill it with diesel, and take the suction line on the fuel pump off and put a longer hose on it and stick it in the can with diesel. See if you can get it running on that. If it runs ok on that, you know your problem are the lines to the tanks, or in the tanks, and not the fuel pump or the lines on the engine. You can let it sit overnight and see if it starts ok the next morning with the fuel can on it.

Hey, got some updates, the mechanical pump sucks good, the fuel goes in the filter, but i installed a clear line between the primer pump and the filter, and the air seems to get sucked in the filter, got any tips?

I’ve also tested with a jug and the primer inlet inside, it started, runned a couple minutes and finally stalled, any ideas?

If you have a leak around the top of the filter or anywhere else on top of the engine, you should have dampness. It does not necessarily need to drip fuel to be a leak bad enough to let air in. A very common spot for air to get in is the fuel heater on top of the filter head/mount. It will have a wiring plug plugged into it. If you have dampness around this heater, it is a sure sign it is letting air into the system.

i looked and it was fine, also i changed it a couple months ago, the thing i don’t understand is the fact that it started with the mechanical pump plugged in a can of diesel, and died 1-2 minutes later

what type of fuel filter are you using? if it is factory filter with drain bowl on the bottom, drain valve can leak on these. they can also vibrate loose, draining filter overnight. check this.

It’a filter that you scew on, with a small screw at the bottom, and i was wondering if you know if smoke machines for evap system works for the air intrusion?

Seal up the filter head, there's many leak points, and you can try plugging the port on the filter head that feeds into #1 return cap. this stops giving the filter an easy place to drain back. But if it's only 1/4 full, you probably have a leak on the bottom somewhere

Running 1 to 2 minutes doesn't sound like the typical top of the engine air intrusion. Once you have air intrusion, it will start running out of the injection pump. All you have left is the fuel in the injection lines and it will usually only run 10-20 seconds before it quits.

I have had a very mild case of air intrusion, where the system was leaking down but very slowly. If I left it overnight, it would start right up in the morning, and after that 10-20 seconds it would stumble a little bit, but then catch back up and run fine the rest of the day. When I had that same mild case, if I left it 2 days or more without starting it, it would be empty of enough fuel where it would do the classic start and then shortly stop. And then a bunch of cranking till it filled with fuel again.

I will have to say, after I put the electric fuel pump on it, when I had air problems after that, it took much less cranking to overcome the air and get it going again.

Okay, it started on the truck’s both tanks, i held it at 2000rpm, for about a minutes then it died, the tanks are at 1/2 each, i have a clear line going to the mechanical pump to the filter, and it seems like the fuel dropped
