I recently helped a buddy purchase a 1990 vw jetta 1.6 diesel na with a bad transmission. Its up and running now with a used 5 speed from his 85 golf, but were having issues with the glow plug system namely the relay/ solenoid. The previous owner put in after market system, but instead of using a garden tractor solenoid could i use a spare 7.3 idi glowplug controller or the solenoid of of the controller.

The controller will do you no good. But the relay itself might work.
Why not return it to stock?

We just tried using the solenoid off the controller, didnt work. He is going to install his glow plug system from the 85 golf in the mean time. Thanks

That's because the Solenoid off the 7.3 is ground activated.
For the vw, it's probably 12v+ activated.
