Ok, I finally need help with my 1989 7.3 idi in ambulance body, my work truck. Ran fine to work last friday but when I started it using my aftermarket glow plug momentary switch, it started fine, glow plugs worked fine but the alternator wasn't charging. I drove it home, pulled off the alternator, took it to the alt shop, they said it tested fine.
Years ago the plug(wiring harness) just above the alternator disintegrated and the two white wires had to be separated and reattached before it would turn over. Upon reinstalling the alternator, I noticed these wires appeared to be getting hot and had worn insulation so I cut, soldered and reattached them again.
I put everything back together but now no glow plugs! I plugged in the block heater and now I'm waiting to see if I can start it and if the alternator works..
My question is: Do those white wires have anything to do with the glow plugs or just a coincidence? Should I just replace the whole harness and where could I even find one?
